We are back with Episode 60 of Cat Crave Radio! The big news this week, of course, is the NFL Draft. We’ll give you a full recap.
Joining us this week to discuss the draft as well as give his thoughts on how he felt our Carolina Panthers did, is Matt Bowen of the National Football Post. He’s also a former seven-year NFL vet who is a contributing writer for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Our old friend Nick Yeoman was back with us for another installment of The Great Debate. This week’s topic was the trade in the second round of the draft. [...]

CORRECTION: The earlier reports of Graham Harrell, QB, of Texas Tech signing with the Panthers was unfounded. He has not signed with any team yet. Below is an updated list of players signed as undrafted free agents.

After that deal with Oakland, the Carolina Panthers suddenly had a seventh-round selection, number 216 overall. They used that pick to select Captain Munnerlyn, CB, South Carolina.
From NFL.com:
Regarded as one of the Southeastern Conference’s rising stars at cornerback, Munnerlyn had a forgetful final season in a Gamecocks uniform that resulted in a benching and eventual dressing down by the coaching staff after he and several other underclassmen did not perform to their expected level of play.
With what will likely be their final pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers use their sixth-round pick, number 202 overall, to select…nobody.
A deal has been made and the Oakland Raiders now hold that pick. We’ll attempt to get the details for you.
UPDATE: The Raiders gave up next year’s sixth-round pick as well as this year’s seventh-rounder to get the Panthers’ sixth-rounder this year.
If things remain as-is, the Carolina Panthers are nearly done with the 2009 NFL Draft. With their fifth-round pick, number 163 overall, they select Duke Robinson, OT, Oklahoma.
From NFL.com:
The great nephew of singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson, Duke is a versatile athlete who has experience at offensive guard and tackle. Regarded as one of the premier blockers in the collegiate game, he was the unquestioned leader of the Sooners’ front wall that cleared rush lanes and protected the pocket for one of the most explosive offenses in the history of the game.
The Carolina Panthers, due to the trade with San Francisco, had two picks in the fourth round. The second of those picks, number 128 overall, was used to select Tony Fiammetta, FB, Syracuse.
From NFL.com:
The team’s starting fullback his last two years, Fiammetta did not get many opportunities to touch the ball, but the team captain developed into one of the Orange’s few bright spots. He also proved to be a capable receiver coming out of the backfield, as the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll member pulled down 28 combined passes as a junior and senior.
It’s the pick the Carolina Panthers received from the Niners in exchange for next year’s first. (They used the second rounder they got from San Francisco to pick Everette Brown.) With that pick, number 111 overall, the Panthers selected Mike Goodson, RB, Texas A&M.
From NFL.com:
Once called the “future of the team” by coach Mike Sherman, Goodson left the university after his junior year under mysterious circumstances. The talented running back could possibly shift to wide receiver at the next level, but injuries and problems with the coaching staff caused the player and team to part ways quietly. No announcement was [...]
The Carolina Panthers used their third-round pick (93rd overall) on defensive lineman Corvey Irvin from the University of Georgia.
From NFL.com:
Like most junior college players who join an established major college program, Irvin had to patiently wait down on the depth chart for his opportunity to start. When standout Jeff Owens was lost for the season after the Bulldogs’ third game last year, Irvin dusted off 16 games of reserve duty to step in and fill the void at left defensive tackle.
Who is Everette Brown?
I’m trying to picture the scene in the Carolina Panthers war room on Saturday. There is Marty Hurney with John Fox seated next to him. Ron Meeks has to be in there somewhere, or had we all forgotten about him?
Yes, it was Meeks who turned a guy from Alabama A&M into a heckuva good defensive end with the Colts – Robert Mathis. He also worked with one of the finest pass rushers in the NFL in Dwight Freeney.
We are left with the uncertainty of Julius Peppers situation. With day one of the draft complete, and no deal done it’s pretty [...]
The Carolina Panthers made their first original pick in this draft at number 59. This is the guy they were going to take first today before they made that deal to get San Francisco’s second-rounder (43rd overall). with that pick they selected…
Sherrod Martin, Safety, Troy
From NFL.com:
After two injury-plagued seasons, Martin was fully healthy in 2008, going on to establish himself as one of the premier pass defenders in the South. He tied the school single-game record and set an NCAA record for most interceptions in a quarter, picking off three passes in the second quarter in the 2008 Alcorn State [...]
