Rivera Era: Tight End's Must Be Relevant

The Carolina Panthers are about to partake in a remodeling phase that fans have not seen in almost ten years. But, with change comes things we as fans can look forward to. With Ron Rivera, Panther fans will get the usual intense defensive look, but what many might not think about is actually utilizing a tight end. Rivera comes from San Diego where they had this guy named Antonio Gates that many people might know of and with the success Rivera saw out of Gates, I look for him to use a similar scheme in getting the tight end’s out in the open field.

If you pay attention to the teams that will be playing in the conference championships this coming weekend you can really understand that all four teams have a very solid Tight End. If Carolina decides to take a chance on Clausen as their “franchise” QB, then they will have to find him a solid escape goat to throw to when in trouble. There were many times Clausen would be in trouble and the only guys he would have a chance to throw to were receivers that were nearly all the way down field. I saw some good things out of Dante Rosario that tell me he could be the answer with his solid hands and his quickness compared to the other two (King and Barnidge).

Rivera will have the opportunity to give these guys a look and see if there is any way to get them somehow back into the offense that last year just made them look like and extra Tackle on the outside. If not then you could see the Panthers maybe take a stab at a tight end in the draft or through free agency.

I expect many changes for the Panthers on the offensive side of the ball in the different formations they will look to run to focus more on having a few safety check downs for Clausen to hit when in trouble. Whether Rivera decides to go with someone in home at Tight End or lands someone new through the draft or free agency, look for the Tight End to have a bigger role in the offense Rivera will run in Carolina.
