The Panthers continued to add to the defensive line today, just a day after signing defensive end Charles Johnson to a six year deal, by
adding former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Ron Edwards. Edwards is 6’3, 315lbs and should help shore up the Panthers putrid run defense last season. Edwards, 32, will be a huge upgrade for the Panthers compared to last season and should end up being a great mentor for both the young defensive tackles, Terrell McClain and Sione Fua.
Edwards is simply a space eater, someone who will take on two to three blockers and free up the linebackers to make plays. Think Maake Kemoeatu before he tore his Achilles tendon. You won’t hear his name much announced over the PA system but his presence will be felt. I can guarantee you the happiest guy right now is Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason because Edwards will be his best friend if he can keep those giant offensive lineman off him and let Beason run free.
Last season with the Chiefs Edwards finished with 26 tackles and 2 sacks. The contract looks to be a three year deal worth $8.25 million.
