I try to keep up with all news concerning the Panthers. Most of the time, I write off an article as something to feature in On The Prowl, but sometimes I come across a piece that needs to be featured.

Cam Newton received a lot of criticism about his performance at the Pro Bowl, but no one really praised him for what he did. By the time he took the field, the pace of the game had changed from the Offensive and Defensive Lines dancing around like a Pop Warner game to a full blown football game. While Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees had time to sit completely still in the pocket, Cam was forced to avoid sacks and throw into full coverage. So this brings me to the article I read recently on the Charlotte Observer’s page. A former NFL Coach is praising Cam Newton for his rookie season, and for good reason. Check back after the break to see Former 49er’s coach Steve Mariucci’s thoughts on Cam.

While many people think Cam Newton may be a one hit wonder, Mariucci sees things differently.

“I think Cam surprised all of us,” Mariucci said Tuesday at Super Bowl media day. “Yeah, he’s the No. 1 pick in the draft. But often times when you go to a team that needs to be rebuilt, that guy just has a real sub-par year.

Cam surprised everyone, including me. I thought the same thing as everyone else: the team is rebuilding and Cam doesn’t have the skills, yet, to succeed in the NFL.

“But boy oh boy, did he take the league by storm. It’s really fun to see. And Cam is growing up fast. He is in the fast lane to being a heck of a quarterback. So that’s really going to stir it up in the NFC South.”

Mariucci also comments that Cam’s talent wasn’t the only reason he was successful, he gives a lot of praise to the Chud.

“I thought he’d be a little more in play this year. He will. His name was out there,” Mariucci said. “And if he has another good offensive year, finding a way for more wins – not just passing yards – but more wins, I think he’s going to get a shot next year.”

There you have it folks, we’re not the only ones who believe Cam Newton will turn this team around. I’ve said it before, give the team a solid defense, and they can win it all. Cam is going to have to develop into a more mature player over the off-season, but the future is bright people. Keep your heads held high!
