Peyton Manning has instructed his agent to begin negotiating terms of a contract with the Denver Broncos. Let’s take a brief look at some of the reasons he may have decided to go there.
First, looking at last season, the Broncos organization is pliable on Offense in that they installed the University of Florida v 2.0 offense just to fit what Tim Tebow did well. I’m assuming they’ll do the same with Peyton as I don’t see him plowing through Linebackers on option runs.
Secondly, they have the best pass rush of any of the teams in the running. What that means is if Manning can get the Broncos a lead of say 7-10 pts or more, they can just unleash that Miller/Dumervil pass rush tandem to wreak havoc on the opposing team trying to catch up.
Thirdly, they had the #1 rushing offense in the NFL last season. Now, a lot of that was due to the T-Bone, but Manning also knows it means they’ve got a tough, hard-nosed offensive line and that he shouldn’t have to carry the team on his shoulders. Recall, they DID go into the 2nd round of the 2011 playoffs with Tebow’s sub-50% passing so they have a very solid team in a weak division.
Lastly, he wants another ring. While San Francisco would seem to be “The Place” to go for that, it also means he’d be competing against his brother in the NFC and as I pointed out in a couple of previous posts, the only place Peyton and Eli would likely want to meet in the playoffs would be as opponents in the Super Bowl. By avoiding the NFC, he accomplishes this. While the Titans might have been a better fit in some ways due to Manning’s roots, I think he was looking to sign with an AFC team that has the best shot at a Super Bowl this year and/or next and that’s obviously the Denver Broncos.
