Over the past few days, rumors of trouble with Harvin’s contract situation have been dribbling out of Minnesota. He’s still under his rookie contract which means he’s affordable.
Today, he requested to be traded.
The Vikings are not likely to want to trade him for the exact reason I just mentioned. He’s the best WR on the team and a dangerous return man when so utilized and he’s 2nd-yr QB Christian Ponder’s most explosive target. Sure, Harvin has battled migrane headaches since college, but they seem to gradually be improving with treatment. He was one of the top-ten WRs in fantasy points during the last 6-8 games of the season in 2011 and you always like to see players finishing strong.
I wouldn’t expect any resolution to this situation anytime soon. The Vikings want to keep him for the remaining 2 years on his cap-friendly salary, but if Harvin becomes too much of a distraction and some team offers a solid (if unspectacular) veteran plus a draft pick, the Vikings might well consider it.
For now, it appears that “As the Vikings Turn” will be a regular soap opera for the rest of the summer. Stay tuned.
