Carolina Panthers: 3 games into the pre-season, what are the needs?

The first roster cut-down went pretty much as expected. The next cut will involve approximately 12 players.Looking at current needs after 3 pre-season games, they seem to be the same needs we had prior to the draft.

  1. A true number two receiver who demands coverage to avoid the double-teaming of Steve Smith. We hope Brandon LaFell will be that guy, but he hasn’t shown it yet. This leaves us with Louis Murphy as our possible number three receiver.
  2. Protecting Cam. Specifically at right tackle, with focus on how Silatolu develops. Amini Silatolu and Byron Bell were beaten in both the Texans and the Jets games, allowing Cam Newton to get sacked.
  3. Creating pressure on the other team’s passer. Another pass rusher is an apparent need. We’llbe up against many of the best passers in the league and if this continues the only way for us to win will be in a shootout.
  4. A true number two corner. Captain Munnerlyn is not the answer and Josh Norman faces a learning curve.

The Carolina Panthers have opened some cap space with the release of Olindo Mare. Will they try tomake a move to shore up one of these concerns? Many people have thrown out the name PlaxicoBurress. This would be a short-term fix due to his age. Several young players that could be available would be Diondre Borel or Tori Gurley with the Green Bay Packers or Jabari Gaffney, just released by the New  England Patriots. Jarius Wynn, released by the Green Bay Packers, would certainly help us at defensive end. Several good young corners are out there, but come with baggage. Lastly, it seems we’re committed to Byron Bell and Amini Silatolu, so how much protection Cam Newton will get may be a concern all season.

Below is a list of the current pre-season roster (only the top 75 players are shown) and a prediction of where they may end up once the last cuts begin. Players such as Andre Nesbitt, Brandon Hogan & David Gettis won’t count against the roster at the start of the season.
