In a surprise move on the opening day of 2013 NFL free agency the cellar-dwelling Buffalo Bills began “circling the wagons” as ESPN commentator Chris Berman would rant and jettisoned starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick from the team.
Don’t let the door hit ya apparently, Ryan.
While the Harvard grad never has not led his team to anything close to making a run at the New England Patriots, he hasn’t been the problem on the offense. He hasn’t had too much to work with in the air despite having a strong running game behind him. It’s evident by now he’s not going to be a guy who can carry the team, however.
Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans signed guard Andre Levitre but lost the services of tight end Jared Cook to the St. Louis Rams. Jeff Fisher reunites with him from his time at the end of his tenure there as Sam Bradford needs some targets to toss to in the Gateway City.
It really is the eye of the storm now. We’ve been left to wondering for weeks between the NFL combine and the beginning of free agency what might happen and here we are. And boy are things happening today!
We also have the San Francisco 49’ers and their wooing Darrelle Revis from the New York Jets unresolved, among other things.
New York Giants TE Martellus Bennett was signed by the Chicago Bears to give Jay Cutler someone to throw to whose last name doesn’t rhyme with DARSHALL while veteran CB Antoine Winfield was released by the Minnesota Vikings.
Some teams are shedding players, some signing multiple big names, and still others are hemorrhaging them. The Baltimore Ravens went from Super Bowl champs to having 22 free agents to deal with and have $120 million tied up now in QB Joe Flacco over the next handful of years. With that kind of expenditure, they couldn’t keep even the majority of them.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed WR Plaxico Burress to a 1-year contract. I’m sure it’s for little money or they’re completely crazy.
One player who is going to stand up and take notice is QB Geno Smith. If Miami can grab a Tannehill at 8, why can’t the Bills?
Arizona at 7, that’s why.
It will be interesting to see how the Buffalo Bills handle the starting QB job between now and the draft for certain as Arizona edged them out for the first likely spot for Smith to be overdrafted into. That’s the official pivot point to the 2013 NFL draft now – the Arizona Cardinals’ pick at #7.
Amazing how the QB in the division who lost the “butt fumble” is staying with his team and Fitzpatrick is not. The Bills did bring a few guys in over the past 4 years or so to try to unseat him…guys like J.P. Losman who vanish completely off the face of the NFL.
And the game marches on….
