The Exceptions to the Rules: NFL Draft 2013

I’ve already mentioned in an article I wrote recently Cordarrelle Patterson would be a huge boost to the Panthers offense and my logical choice for their 14th pick that they have this year. There are some exceptions to this rule that have crept up in my mind. These “exceptions” have definitely made themselves known now that the draft is just a few hours away. Get excited guys, were have finally made it after months of waiting!

The first exception of the Patterson pick is Lane Johnson. I really don’t think that Johnson will be around by the 14th pick in the draft, he is a fantastic player with amazing potential, but if he is, the Panthers need to fill the growing hole that is the fading of Jordan Gross’s career. Star Lotulelei also falls under that, “If he’s there, take him” rule. He would be a great Lineman no matter where he lands, and honestly his health problems will more than likely not come back to haunt any team that chooses him. I’m not exactly fond of drafting a Defensive Tackle with our first round pick. We need one, a space-eater though, and not a play-maker. Space-eaters will prove to be abundant in the later rounds. I’d like to see the Panthers select Jarvis Jones from Georgia with our second round pick to fill the need for a DT, but again if Lotulelei is around, take him.

Another exception applies if Cordarrelle Patterson AND Tavon Austin are not around by the time the Panthers pick. If Patterson, Austin, Johnson, and Lotulelei are not around by the time the Panthers pick then we should definitely take Texas Safety Kenny Vaccaro. I love Vaccaro and if we didn’t have bigger needs with Offensive Lineman and Wide Receivers I would say he should be our first pick in the draft. Vaccaro is an automatic starter where ever goes, which I really wish was Carolina.

I don’t plan for the Panthers to trade either.  The ground we need to make up in our Offensive/Defensive Line core as well as our receiving core, the thought of a trade down would be asinine and detrimental in the grand scheme of things. Come on Gettleman; please do not even entertain the idea of trading down for the 49’ers.

Well those are my thoughts on the draft. As always, leave a comment if you passionately agree or disagree with the statements I have made, I’d love to hear them. And please watch the Draft! Everyone who calls themselves a Panther fan or anyone who has ever muttered the words “Keep Pounding” should watch the draft. I expect a playmaker to join the Carolina Panthers tonight, hopefully a Panther that proves to be one of the best!
