Kawann Short the Next Panther

In the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers have selected Kawann Short. Kawann Short, a Defensive Tackle out of Purdue University, is the 44th overall pick in the NFL draft.

Immediately I am already starting to question the pick. Why did we pick up yet another Defensive Tackle after picking up Star Lotulelei? I would have rather have Keenan Allen out of California or an Offensive Tackle or a Corner Back/Safety to boost the Secondary. Either way though, Short has first round talent, though I’m sure he flew way under the radar for everyone who was projecting the draft picks. He will be a great player for the Panthers, though I’m sure this is making “Big Dwan” sweat, as I’m sure he is already worried about keeping his starting job, which is exactly what my mind went straight to.

I’m not too excited about the pick; again, it doesn’t exactly make sense for a team that has a proven and stout Defensive Line already. Then again, I sort of saw this coming with Gettleman’s “Hog-Mollies” comment a few weeks ago. With that comment I expected yet another Defensive Tackle to be chosen in the draft, but I wasn’t expecting yet another “Hog-Molly” to be chosen so soon. Back to back Defensive Tackles? Again I’m very skeptical.

Along with “Big Dwan’s” starting job, I’m starting to worry about the futures of the other Defensive Tackles on the Panther’s roster. We all know that Sione Fua is an underachiever, and Frank Kearse proved to be a decent backup with Ron and Dwan Edwards both out with injuries, but Kearse is just a backup, he doesn’t have the talent and that’s that. I just wish the Panthers would have spent their draft pick in a much needed position, like an Offensive Lineman or a Secondary player. It would have made more sense to me, but then again that’s my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

Those are my thoughts on the second pick by the Panthers, but what are yours? Please leave them in the comments below.

I agree with you. No 3rd round pick and we pick a DT in the second round. Thats doesn’t make sense at all. D edwards and star would have already been good together i feel like. This is just so upsetting. Might as well draft a qb in the 4th round or even a rb right?

I’m glad you agree! I get that Gettleman wants to build our D/O Lines with Hog Mollies, but at that point there were only four WRs taken In the draft and still a large group of talent, why didn’t we get a player who can make plays on the opposite side of the ball?

Completely agree as well. As soon as the pick was made, I was left scratching my head. I felt with Star taken in the first we were ok and figured we’d make a play on one for depth later on. But with Keenan Allen available or Swearinger available kind of left me disappointed.

That so why I said too much defense tackle and there good enough rotation is dawn edward. So we do really need cornerback and safety.
