Coach Rivera is loving the communication he is hearing in the OTAs. On panthers.com, he stated,”communication that is going on especially on the defensive side more so between the linebackers, defensive line, and defensive backs is probably one of the things we lacked the last 2 years…last year there was a new middle linebacker now I think Luke is really much more comfortable, a lot more expressive on the checks and calls he has to make.”
He feels with better communication on the field the, the players are better able to play and react instead of thinking what to do. He also gave an example of how better communication helps the offense as well. One of the problems he saw last year, was slowness getting the play in and the players out of the huddle. On the play calls this year he said, “It’s a mouth full, you look at the calls and how long the calls take. I think sometimes it makes it a lot easier…they shortened the call and make it a lot simpler…what we want to do is be more uptempo, we want to practice uptempo.” He also went on to say that the communication he has seen has gone to a higher level.
Cam also chimed in on the offense saying, “As an offense, we have to maximize each and every play…it was a lot of verbiage that was in the offense before…Shula’s main focus has been to simplify things for us…when you know what you have to do you execute.”
Communication is an important factor for a team. If the team does not have players who can communicate what the coaches want on the field, then the chances for the play being successful is pretty low. The panthers have shown growth from year 1 to year 2. If they can continue to show the growth they have in the communication the last two seasons, the sky is the limit for this team.
