For NFL players, it must be tough to grow up a fan of a team, only to get drafted by another team upon finally making it to the NFL. It must be even harder to get drafted by a divisional rival.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is living with that dilemma, as he was raised in Atlanta and was an Atlanta Falcons fan growing up.
However, playing for the Panthers hasn’t changed anything for Newton, who openly stated that he is still a Falcons fan.
Newton had this to say in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
I’ve always been a Falcons fan, and I’m still a Falcons fan except for those two times a year.
Of course, when he plays against the Falcons, things are different, but outside of his two annual games against Atlanta, he still roots for his favorite childhood team.
While it may not mean anything, there could still be Panthers fans who think that Newton should despise opposing teams, particularly teams in his division, the NFC South.
However, it’d also be pretty hard to quit rooting for a team cold turkey after being drafted by another team.
What do you say, Panthers fans? Do you care that Newton still roots for the Falcons?
If so, why?
