The Carolina Panthers have come to terms to re-sign cornerback Drayton Florence. Prior to the start of the season the Panthers opted to part ways with Florence in order to clear the way for Josh Thomas and Josh Norman. After a rash of injuries to the secondary against Buffalo the team went to a familiar face for reinforcement.
When Florence was signed this offseason the idea was that he would provide a veteran presence in a young secondary. The Panthers had to ride the Josh’s last season when an injury to Chris Gamble put him out for the year. They chose to go with them again this year and while their performance hasn’t been good, it is injuries they are both battling that sparked the move to bring back Florence, not their play on the field.
He’s a Band-Aid on a severely broken arm, but the hope is that he can help stabilize the secondary as they wait for guys to get healthy. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Florence play a big role the rest of the way. Norman looked awful against the Bills and his lack of awareness left wide receiver Steve Johnson wide open for the game-winning touchdown. He’s not ready to be a starter, and while Thomas hasn’t been as bad as Norman, he still has been bad.
Writing about this secondary is depressing. The fact that I’m getting excited about the idea of Florence starting is even more depressing. These are our 2013-2014 Carolina Panthers!
