The Carolina Panthers have shown up in a big way against the New York Giants, resulting in a 17 point lead heading into halftime. Carolina’s defense has been outstanding and the offense found the end zone twice.
Eli Manning and the Giants wide receivers were supposed to tear apart this Panthers secondary, but he has just 37 yards at the break and has been sacked six times. Yes, you did read that right. Greg Hardy picked up three of those sacks and rookie defensive tackles Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei each picked up a sack. It was a dominating performance by the Carolina front seven, but the secondary deserves praise for holding up. The stat of the day so far has been the Giants running 15 of 24 plays for zero or negative yardage.
Cam Newton has been up and down so far. He threw a pick with pressure in his face and on a bad route by Brandon LaFell, but it was a dangerous throw that shouldn’t have been attempted. Mike Schula has dialed up some runs for Cam which we haven’t seen much of early in the year. Newton has 38 rushing yards to go with 112 yards through the air. Brandon LaFell capped a 13-play, 65-yard drive with a nice pass from Newton in the back of the end zone with 19 seconds left remaining in the half.
Now the question is whether or not the Panthers can close out a game.
