Jonathan Stewart and his troubled ankle landed him on the PUP list heading into the season, but for the first time in a long time there was good news regarding the running back. He returned to the practice field, although it was only the sidelines, where he ran sprints today. This may seem like a minor development but with Stewart eligible to play in two weeks these are the steps you want to see him taking.
Carolina could go from being thin at running back to having depth if everything goes to plan with Kenjon Barner hoping to return sooner than later, and with Stewart seemingly close also. DeAngelo Williams has ran the ball strong through three games, but adding Barner and Stewart to the mix would give the Panthers a dynamic running game. We’ve all seen what Williams and Stewart have accomplished together when they are both healthy at the same time. With a commitment to the run this year that wasn’t there last year it opens the door for Double Trouble to return.
Currently, though, none of that matters. Until we actually see Stewart on the field in pads and taking a handoff in a game all of this is just a possibility. For the Panthers to contend in the division they are going to need it to become a reality. Stewart runs hard like Mike Tolbert but with a much better burst. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield and in the past has shown he has breakaway speed. If Carolina gets that same guy back this offense is going to be fun to watch.
