As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Carolina Panthers they suddenly have. Left guard Amini Silatolu will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL leaving a struggling unit even thinner. This injury comes at a time when Silatolu was starting to settle into his own, but his focus will now turn to rehabbing his injury as opposed to the upcoming opponent. Veteran Travelle Wharton is expected to take over.
Cam Newton was sacked seven times against Arizona and was constantly under duress. The Panthers are going to have to scheme better to protect their franchise quarterback going forward otherwise he isn’t going to make it the entire season. That could mean more traditional sets with extra blockers in, which means less receiving options on the field but it’s necessary.
Silatolu was average in pass protection but excelled when asked to run block. As big of a loss as it is for Cam and the passing game, production wise it may be the running backs who suffer more from Silatolu being out.
With the Panthers waking up 1-3 today and the news of Amini being out for the season, there have definitely been better days to be a fan of the team. The more this season goes on the more it feels like another lost season in Charlotte.
