Well the Panthers have their first playoff opponent since 2008, the San Francisco 49ers, and you can find all your Panthers playoff coverage here at CatCrave.com (shameless plug). But the Panthers are also making some moves to bolster their roster to get it to the maximum offseason limit of 90 players. The Carolina Panthers signed eight players over to the Future/Reserve List last Friday. These players will not appear on the current roster until the beginning of the 2014 NFL year, starting in March.
The signed players are:
Wide Receiver – Toney (My Name!) Clemons
Defensive Tackle – Casey Walker
Guards – Derek Dennis and Phillipkeith Manley
Tackles – Kevin Hughes and Oscar Johnson
Cornerback – De’Quan Menzie
Linebacker – D.J. Smith
It seems the Panthers are increasing the size of their Offensive Line, one the bigger problems the team faces going forward. With Jordan Gross leaving in the near future, the Panthers need to find a replacement at Left Tackle, and maybe, just maybe, one of these new Tackles could be that replacement.
A little fun fact to go along with the signing, courtesy of the Charlotte Observer. It seems that recent signee D.J. Smith was a player at the Charlotte/Mecklenburg school Independence, as well as at Appalachian State University before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. This is also Toney Clemons and Casey Walker’s second time being in Carolina after being selected to Practice Squad earlier this season.
