The Panthers lost their receiver from LSU in Brandon Lafell, but have the opportunity to draft an even more talented one in Odell Beckham Jr. Odell is a small receiver with huge hands. He is only 5’11” but has 10″ hands! He has great top end speed, but is at his best in space. He does a great job of dipping his hips and eluding tackles. He even returned kicks and punts at LSU. Beckham Jr. has flashed the ability to make spectacular catches away from his body, but could be more consistent with the easy catches. He is certainly a receiver who could fall to the Panthers in the draft and many mocks have that happening.
The Panthers have no credible receivers left on the team and will almost certainly draft a receiver with their first pick. They may even double dip in the first two rounds like they did with defensive tackles last years. Beckham is small in stature and if the Panthers select him, they will need a big receiver to pair with him. Beckham could be the new returner for the Panthers, now that Ted Ginn left for Arizona. Odell is not shy about contact and will not hesitate to set blocks. Ron Rivera values receivers that can block in his power running offense. Beckham is a guy that can catch a 5 yard pass and turn it into a 50 yard gain. He’s not the most NFL ready receiver, but he has potential to be a number one option.
