The Panthers have officially announced the signing of free agent wide receiver Jericho Cotchery. Cotchery is 31 years old and is a number 3 receiver at best. Now the Panthers finally have a receiver with an NFL catch on their roster. Cotchery decided against resigning with Pittsburgh and signed a 2 year deal worth around 5 million with the Panthers. Pittsburgh mainly utilized Cotchery as red zone specialist. He was surprisingly effective in this role grabbing 10 touchdowns. The Panthers will more than likely ask him to take on a similar role and mentor whoever they draft.
Cotchery is a solid veteran, but he is nowhere near a number one receiver. The Panthers will still need to draft at least 2 receivers and possibly sign another guy like Sidney Rice. This is what Gettleman likes to do in free agency. He lets the big names go and saves his money looking for bargains. Expect to see some more moves over the next few days from Gettleman. The Panthers still have needs at offensive tackle and cornerback. Luckily this year’s draft is rich in players of need for the Panthers.
