Yesterday the Panthers announced the signing of two more free agents, CB Antoine Cason and WR Tiquan Underwood. It is clear Gettleman is content to save money and dig for gems in free agency. We have only had one draft to observe Gettleman’s approach, but based off his free agent philosophy, it seems he is a guy who will not make any flashy moves. This is a conservative approach, but one that pays off in the NFL. Look at Atlanta last year. They offered up plenty of early round picks to trade up and draft Julio Jones in 2011. As a result they were not allowed to add quality, young depth to their roster. Couple that with a rash of injuries like last season and you’ve got a team watching the playoffs from home.
Players often do not live up to the big contracts they are given in free agency. It’s a real boom-or-bust scenario and the Panthers do not have the cap space to make any mistakes signing a big name that does not pan out. Tiquan Underwood is only a number 3 receiver but possess great top end speed to be a downfield threat, the role Ted Ginn had on the team last year. Antoine Cason is a huge under the radar signing. Cason played under Ron Rivera in San Diego for a few years so the two already have a history together. Cason is a reliable cornerback and a great replacement for Captain Munnerlyn. This is the time of free agency when Gettleman likes to make his moves and rumors are abound that he will meet with Kenny Britt sometime this weekend.
Britt has been an unreliable receiver throughout his NFL career. He has had several off the field issues and is not the kind of player Jerry Richardson typically allows in his locker room. Still, Britt could be a solid number 2 option if he stays healthy and buys into the Carolina locker room’s attitude. The Panthers still have a dire need to replace Jordan Gross at left tackle and find a true number 1 receiver. Word is the Panthers are in the market for Philadelphia wide receiver Desean Jackson. More developments on that story later.
