Panthers in the Market for Desean Jackson

There’s a lot of buzz around Charlotte, as John Clayton has recently announced the Panthers are inquiring about Philadelphia receiver Desean Jackson.  It was reported the Eagles are only looking for a third round pick in exchange for Jackson.  Jackson fanned the flames yesterday by posting a picture on Instagram of him and Cam at the Pro Bowl:

Desean Jackson is a fiery competitor with blazing speed.  He is similar to Steve Smith in many ways.  Both are smaller receivers by today’s NFL standards, but make up for it with speed and agility.  While not as tough as Smith (no one is), Jackson has deceptive strength and is a playmaker in space.  He is a proven number 1 receiver and could be a great fit in the Panthers offense.  The problem is his cap figure.  Jackson is scheduled to make a little over 10 million dollars this season and has 30 million left on his five year contract.

If the Panthers are to trade for Jackson, he would have to agree to a huge pay cut, something that Desean does not seem willing to do.  The Panthers would also have to restructure several other contracts as they have plans for contract extensions on Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly’s rookie deals.  Not to mention the Kraken is only franchised for this season.  The Panthers could pick up the fifth year team option on Cam’s contract and try and extend Luke and his contract in the same season, but by the time that happens, Cam would be commanding top dollar as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league.

While a 3rd round pick in exchange for Desean Jackson is a steal, it seems highly unlikely the Panthers will make the trade.  Gettleman has proven to be conservative in the offseason and he simply does not have the money to sign Jackson.  There’s also the issue of Desean’s character.  He has shown a selfish side at times, but I think that would change quickly inside the Panthers’ locker room.  The Panthers are desperate for receivers so anything could happen.  We should find out in the next few days what will happen on the Desean Jackson front.  Stay tuned and keep pounding.
