The Carolina Panthers are trying to narrow down their roster to 75 players by Tuesday afternoon. Sunday afternoon, they released and waived a total of ten players from their roster. Four more players need to go by Tuesday’s 4 PM deadline.
Panthers.com has announced the following ten players as camp casualties:
- WR – Toney Clemons
- P – Jordan Gay
- DT – Linden Gaydosh
- DE – Alex Hall
- OT – Oscar Johnson
- WR – Marvin McNutt
- LB – Anthony Morales
- WR – Kealoha Pilares
- DE – Craig Roh
- WR – Tiquan Underwood
Tiquan Underwood was the first shot heard across the Panthers’ landscape today as he was given his outright release. The other nine players were waived shortly after the news of Underwood broke.
A bit surprising is the surplus of receivers that hit the chopping block since there was such a perceived need at the position. Pilares is a bit of a shock since he made a few plays when given time and has contributed on Special Teams. Marvin McNutt looked to be the “answer” back in the spring as the young player with the best chance of breaking through, but that was not the case once mini-camp and OTAs got underway.
Linden Gaydosh was a fan favorite that became a victim of an over-stacked defensive line.
I can see the Panthers trying to stash a few of these players on the Practice Squad if they clear waivers though. Toney Clemons is very raw and Kealoha Pilares is very familiar with the system.
There are still four more players that will not be a Carolina Panther by Tuesday at 4:01PM, so CatCrave.com will keep you posted as soon as those remaining cuts come in.
After Tuesday, the Panthers will then have to release an additional 22 players by August 30th in order to get down to the mandated 53-man regular season roster limit. Seeing cuts like these today shows that the depth of this year’s team is very strong.
