The Carolina Panthers front office had a difficult task to sort out today as they had to trim their roster down to 53-players.
Much like every preseason, there were some shockers tossed in amidst the obvious choices. Panthers fans should also not view this roster as a finished product. The organization will also keep an eye on the wire to see if anyone that is an upgrade becomes available.
The following players are no longer Carolina Panthers, per Steve Reed :
- LB – Denicos Allen
- CB – Carrington Byndom
- G – Derek Dennis
- CB – James Dockery
- LB – Adarius Glanton
- WR – Tavarres King
- S – Robert Lester
- WR – Marcus Lucas
- T – Andrew McDonald
- S – Tom Nelson
- DT – Drake Nevis
- RB – Darrin Reaves
- DT – Micanor Regis
- LB – D.J. Smith
- CB – Josh Thomas
- DT – Casey Walker
- FB – Michael Zordich
A few names jump out as sad departures.
Tavarres King, Robert Lester, Mike Zordich and Darrin Reaves look like victims of the numbers game.
I really thought King would hold on here, but it looks like the Panthers are only going to carry five receivers on the active roster. He should be able to latch on somewhere else because he has potential. Ideally, he goes unclaimed through waivers and the Panthers stash him away on the practice squad.
Zordich and Reaves were members of an already crowded backfield, but they are both chocked full of upside.
There are a couple of players that the Panthers could eventually designate to the practice squad.
Marcus Lucas, Carrington Byndom and the aforementioned running backs would be ideal stowaways on the Carolina practice squad.
It was nice to see a few players make the roster too.
Brenton Bersin, Philly Brown, David Foucault, and Andrew Norwell made the cut. These youngsters will be capable backups and can be groomed over time to play larger roles.
Keep an eye on Carolina over the next few days as they shuffle the depth chart and possibly steal a veteran player off the waiver wire.
