The first player that comes to mind for me when thinking about the Panthers Ted Ginn Jr. is Baltimore’s very own Jacoby Jones. Both of these guys were members of the 2007 NFL draft. This is the same draft that saw WR Calvin Johnson go #2 overall to the Detroit Lions. Miami would decide to pull the trigger on the explosive Ginn with the ninth overall selection. Jacoby Jones would go on to be selected by the Texans in round three.

There was no denying Ginn’s amazing speed and potential upside. He had filled up several highlight reals while he was with “The Ohio State”. Of course this didn’t keep many Dolphins fans from blasting the Dolphins brass for using such a high pick on Ginn. To really try and put into perspective why so many Miami fans where upset, I have put together a small, yet notable list of players that were selected shortly after Ginn. Do the names Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch, Darelle Revis, Dwayne Bowe, or the Panthers own John Beason ring any bells? One interesting thing to note about this list in case you don’t remember is Darelle Revis. Darelle could have been wearing a Panthers jersey had the Panthers chose to not trade down for Beason. Enough with the past, as hindsight is always 20/20 and in some cases things just don’t go the way you had hoped.

When looking at both Ginn and Jones its easy to see that both bring similar things to the table. Both are incredibly fast. Both can be incredibly illusive with the ball in their hands. In all fairness both have been less than stellar so far in their careers. Ginn has seen his moments, especially on kick and punt returns. Jacoby was solid last season while doing his part to help the Ravens become Super Bowl Champs. Jacoby didn’t really pile up a great amount of receiving yards or touchdowns, however, he made big plays for them when was needed. Most importantly, Jacoby showed a knack for taking the top off of the opposing defenses, forcing the CB’s to follow him down field. This allowed the receivers underneath to make more catches. Just a reminder, Hurney kicked the tires on Jones before the Ravens reeled him in.

I do not think it is too far-fetched to think Ginn could provide this type of solid play for the Panthers in the upcoming season. The Panthers will have to install some type of package for Ginn to allow him to do what he does best, stretching the field. I think Ginn will make an immediate impact on special teams, I just hope he can give us the true deep ball threat we have been searching for as well. Having a guy named Steve Smith as his teammate certainly couldn’t hurt his progression.

The biggest question at the end of last season for the Carolina Panthers was whether Ron Rivera would stay or go. With the Panthers sitting on the abyss of a fourth year straightwithout playoffs, the third under Rivera, it is needless to say the outlook is bleak, to say the least, for our head coach.

No fan is questioning the talent of the Carolina Panthers this year. Consistent free agent pickups and a solid draft class have left the Panthers with plenty of talent and one more year of leadership for our veteran players. By all means the Panthers should be able to hoist a Lombardi trophy.

The simple fact is Cam Newton has the ability to become an elite QB, and the triple threat of Smith, LaFell and Olsen is backed up by the satcked running game of Stewart, Williams, Tolbert, and now Barner. On the defensive side of the ball, the draft pickups solved the depth problem for the linebacking core, and several free agent moves to grab CB gave the Panthers the pass defense they need to keep opposing points off the board.

These moves by the new GM have given Rivera all the talent he needs to go deep into the playoffs. The only question left to answer is whether he can make the coaching moves needed to lead this team to the promised land, starting with the playbook and calming down the up and coming QB.

Every Carolina Panthers fan wants to see Rivera succeed. Steve Smith, Beason, and Gross all deserve to leave this league with a ring on their finger, as Panthers. Something is brewing in Carolina. All the players stood around their head coach and earned him his third year. Now it is time for the fans to see what the players have seen, a coach that can obviously lead that well behind the scenes should be able to show it on the field. If that happens, the Lombardi will be in Carolina for many years to come and Rivera will have no problem getting a contract extension.

Not all aspects of the 2012 Carolina Panthers defense struck fear into the hearts of opposing teams, however, I am of the belief that our pair of nasty defensive ends most certainly did. Charles Johnson showed us again why it took “BIG MONEY” to keep him around. He finished up his season with 42 total tackles and 12.5 sacks. Greg Hardy seemingly came out of nowhere with 61 total tackles and 11 sacks of his own.

The thing that really amazes me when discussing Hardy’s numbers is the amount of production, given the broken thumb he suffered in September. That’s right folks, the Kraken was able to unleash an onslaught of terror even while having one tentacle tied behind his back. Panther fans have to be licking their chops in anticipation of what he might do this season with “two” good hands.

December 16, 2012; San Diego, CA, USA; Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy (76) prior to the game against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.
Just as sudden as his emergence from the depths of the NFL sea, is the worry he may be captured by another ship in the harbor here soon. It is a known fact that free agent defensive ends are excepting less money as of late to play in the NFL. Would the Panthers be wise to try to sign him now? Some have speculated that there is some form of collusion at play, allowing the owners to work together so the players can not pit them against each other to drive up the price of their services. Here is an artical provided by Pro Football talk to help you better understand: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/03/league-union-disagree-on-collusion/

No matter what the reason may be, the fact still remains that if we hope to continue watching the evolution of this mythical creature, we will have to fork over the proverbial “treasure”.

The real question becomes when? Does Dave Gettleman get on the phone with Greg’s agent, in hopes of reaching a deal before the start of the 2013 season? Do we wait to see if the Kraken surfaces in true form once more this year? If we wait too long, the Panthers brass will be left following a map looking for “x marks the spot” along with every other team in need of a dominant pass rusher.
I have full confidence in the Panthers to do everything within reason to keep the Kraken in familiar waters. The only thing to do now Panther fans is brace yourself and don’t look over the side of the boat. He’s not coming for you, he’s coming for every quarterback in the NFL.
