This week the Panthers are facing a real challenge. They are visiting the Windy city, and once again the Bears are Monsters of the Midway. There is something different about this Bears team, they can score. The defense is just as dangerous as the offense when it comes to putting points on the board. If we were to look at scoring units on teams, whether it be offensive or defensive units, the Bears defense would be a highly ranked unit. They have had an uncanny ability to force turnovers and take them back for scores this season. Ball protection will be crucial for the Panthers Sunday.

Oct 22, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) is sacked by Detroit Lions middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch (55) and outside linebacker Justin Durant (52) during the second quarter at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

Jay Cutler leads an explosive offense. Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte are 2 of his favorite targets. Anytime either of them has the football they are a real threat to take it to the house. The Bears offense uses a good mix of run and pass, and Forte has had success doing both. Marshall with his size and speed is a tough matchup for most corners in the league. This will be especially true when it comes to the Panthers somewhat diminutive corners. If Chicago’s offense has one weak spot it is their offensive line. This became crystal clear when the Bears played the Packers. Clay Matthews was in the offensive backfield so much that game I thought he had been traded to the Bears and they had moved him to fullback. This is the weakness the Panthers will have to capitalize on if they want to have any chance of winning this game.

Now when the Panthers have the ball they will be facing the #1 rush defense, the #1 scoring defense, and the #1 defense in forcing turnovers. Sounds really scary does it not. Sometimes numbers can be deceiving. Overall the Bears defense is ranked 6th which is among the top of the league’s defenses, we haven’t played too many tougher defenses so far this season. Sure the offense has it’s work cut out for them but I believe with a sound game plan we can score on this defense. The Panthers have stated publicly they will be making a serious commitment to run the ball. They will be getting away from the, now ineffective, read option play and getting back to the more traditional style offense. It’s about time! We can also see this by the Panthers naming Stewart the starter this week. He will be more effective out of a more traditional style running attack than Dwill. A real commitment to the run game will prove to be invaluable to Cam. That was the one thing our offense has been lacking this season.

Oct 21, 2012; Charlotte, NC, USA; Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart (28) runs the ball during the second quarter against the Dallas Cowboys at Bank of America Stadium.
Committing to running the ball will open the passing game. Now I’m not talking about the vertical passing game I mean short crossing patterns. The underneath stuff will be key to bring up the safeties. Once that has been accomplished then we can look to go over the top. But it is vital that we feed Olsen and LaFell early in the contest to draw up Major White and Chris Conte. I personally like the matchup of Smith against either of the Bears corners. “Peanut” Tillman and Tim Jennings will have a difficult time covering Smith due to his quickness. They are good corners like the Seahawks have, but without the skills of Sherman and Browner. When we look back to last season’s trip to Chicago the Panthers had a stellar day offensively. Cam went 22 of 46 for 374 yards and he tossed a touchdown to Olsen. Double trouble combined for 134 yards rushing, and Steve Smith broke bad with 8 receptions for an eye popping 181 yards. Cam and this offense put up 29 points last year and I believe we can do it again. That was against basically the same Bears defense as what we will be facing this week. What lost the game for us last season was the play of our special teams, and Matt Forte’s 205 yards rushing. Cutler had an absolutely abysmal day offensively. He went 9 for 17 and only threw for 102 yards and he even threw an interception. However with the success the Bears had running the ball, Cutler didn’t need a big day. If we can’t stop Forte then it doesn’t matter what our offense does.

Oct 21, 2012; Charlotte, NC, USA; Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith (89) reacts on the field. The Cowboys defeated the Panthers 19-14 at Bank of America Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

The defensive game plan should focus on penetration. Our defensive line is going to have to get into the Chicago backfield. When Forte is given the ball we must keep the offensive lineman off our linebackers so they can make the tackle on him. That is a key to the game plan as well, tackle Forte on 1st contact. Don’t allow him to get into the 2nd level and break off long runs. When Cutler drops back to pass we MUST pressure him. As we have seen too often our defensive backs can’t cover receivers for more than just a few seconds so we will have to get to Cutler. We need to hit him and knock him down every chance we get to try and frustrate him so he starts trying to force the ball. That will give us a chance for turnovers which will be an important statistic in determining the winner of this game.

Special teams will be a disadvantage for us. The Bears have the greatest return man in the history of the NFL on their team. Knowing this we MUST kick the ball away from Hester EVERY time!!! I cannot stress this point enough. Don’t let him be the difference in this game.

The game on paper looks like a really bad matchup. I believe the Panthers have a good chance in this game. The game plan needs to truly have a commitment to the run, short controlled passes such as underneath crossing routes, and screens to keep the Bears defensive line honest. Defensively pressure has to be our main focus. We must get Cutler out of rhythm, and disrupt the timing of passing plays. When Forte has the ball it’s imperative to bring him down on 1st contact. If we protect the football and execute this game plan, we will pull off the upset. Leaving Chitown with a win will go along way in getting this Panthers team back on track. My prediction: Carolina 23 Chicago 19. Go Panthers!

As usual, I’ll leave the play-by-play to other sites better suited to them. The Packers got out to a 13-0 lead at halftime and let the Bears lose the rest of the game. Ugly game for Bears fans.

Suffice it to say that Chicago self-destructed in this one and it started with trash-talking the Packers’ defense a few days ago. League Crybaby Jay Cutler was so overconfident after their game against the vaunted Colts defense that his already over-inflated ego had to taunt the team they were about to play.

I might just go look and find out what the Chicago newspapers say about him online tomorrow. He has yet to mature but he better learn from the experience of Clay Matthews and his four – yes, FOUR – sacks. He hit him numerous other times as well…all legal hits. Cutler was sacked 7 times on the night and yes, he continued his picky ways with tossing 4 interceptions.

Sept 13, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (22) is stopped by Green Bay Packers defenders during the first quarter at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

Looks like he made a donation for every Clay Matthews sack.

AR-12′s night was better, with 219 yards and a TD and a pick. The INT was a result of his receiver breaking off the route in a scramble and going away from the quarterback. When the QB is under duress, you need to come back to the football.

Both Rodgers and Cutler had an interception that was the result of that not happening. One of Cutler’s interceptions was on a mid-range throw to Earl Bennett, who stood there and let the ball come to him while Charles Woodson jumped in front of the pass for his 55th career interception.

What did we learn?

We learned Green Bay apparently CAN run the ball if they put their minds to it after all. Cedric Benson had 81 rushing and 35 receiving yards. I doubt he’s still around in many fantasy league waiver wires, but he might be around in some 10-team leagues, depending.

Speaking of RBs, the Bears’ Matt Forte left in the third quarter with his own Cedric Bensonmum (hat tip to Sir Alec Guiness as the blind butler in “Murder by Death”) – mimicking performance with an ankle injury. Early word is a sprained ankle but no details other than that so far.

The Bears offense ran up the score with 41 against Indy last week. Conclusions:

1) The Indy defense was neglected in the top end of the 2012 draft and MLB Pat Angerer is out. They’re horrible.

2) The Bears’ offensive line seems every bit as bad as last year’s was.

3) The Packers’ defense is a little better than thought in the preseason, but they played over their heads tonight…against a bad line. Brandon Marshall dropped a wide-open perfect pass in the end zone. In the second quarter, the Packers ran a successful fake FG out of the blue with a shuttle pass inside from the holder to TE Tom Crabtree who came across the formation behind the line, took the ball that holder Tim Masthay flipped to him around the right end and didn’t stop until he hit paydirt 27 yards later.

Subtract the extra 4 if they kick the FG, and it’s a 19-17 game. That’s two plays completely blown by the Bears. And if the 44-yard would-be attempt had missed, the Bears win 17-16. So, what happened was more a confluence of events that allowed the defense to shine than anything else. They were playing with an early lead against a team with a bad line.

4) The Packers really are mortal. After 4 turnovers and the exit of Forte from the game, they only had 23 points and Rodgers was pressured at times. AR-12′s a good scrambler who buys time to throw. The offense still isn’t running that smoothly (for the Packers) and the long interlude until their game next weekend will help answer those questions since they’ll have extra time to prepare.

At least this week, I got off to a 1-0 start since I had the Pack winning by ten. Woo, look at me going out on a limb…

The first game of NFL week two brings us a game that could have ramification down the road as NFC North divisional foes face off in Green Bay, Wisconsin tonight. The Chicago Bears (1-0) visit a wounded Green Bay Packers (0-1) team.

DAAA BEARSSSSS have found some explosiveness on offense with their WR pickups in the offseason. Brandon Marshall’s prowess has been established and 6’5″ Alshon Jeffery, their 2nd-round pick from South Carolina, had a nice first game against Indy with 80 receiving yards including a 42-yard TD.

They have as good a mix of WRs as anyone and actually compare nicely with the Packers’ top few. Marshall and Jeffery are big, physical guys that can “play above the goalpost” as it were, snagging passes at the highest point that the smaller DBs can’t reach. That takes accuracy and timing. Cutler and Marshall already know each other from Denver and Jeffery is working his way into things nicely.

Add into the mix the not-often-targeted but highly dangerous open-field runner Devin Hester. We know he can score from anywhere already and when you’ve got a complete back like Matt Forte with very soft hands and 4.4 speed, and the Bears have plenty of weapons to move the ball against last year’s 32nd-ranked defense.

The biggest thing to watch in terms of gameplanning will be how many times do the Bears try to run it? Forte is a top-ten RB with his skill set and the Packers’ defense gave up 5.8 yards/rushing attempt against the 49′ers with <del datetime="2012-09-13T14:33:07+00:00">Al</del> Frank Gore getting 112 yards on just 16 carries.

Aaron Rodgers was the Packers’ leading rusher with 27 yards on 5 attempts while Cedric Benson gained 18 on 9 carries. The Packers never have been a running team in recent years and don’t appear to care to try doing it now. With their QB, TE, and WRs, why would they?

Sep 09, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (22) rushes the ball past Indianapolis Colts defensive back Vontae Davis (23) during the second quarter at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

The answer for the Bears is controlling the clock and keeping AR-12 off the field. It’s kind of obvious, yes, but it’s what the Niners did to beat them last week. Clay Matthews had 2.5 sacks, but he’s a known quantity and the Packers’ D lacks another consistent pass-rusher. Running the ball effectively has the side effect of slowing down the pass rush and opening up the play-action pass, something Cutler is good at.

Look for the Bears to try to establish the run early, despite some of the jawboning Cutler has done about the Packers secondary the past couple of days. Running the ball keeps the clock ticking and keeps AR-12 and his weapons on the sideline while resting your own defense. The same gameplan has been used for 15 years against Peyton Manning and Tom Brady…usually unsuccessfully.

With the Packers’ defense having been so bad last season and showing little sign of improvement so far this season, that’s exactly what the Bears will plan on doing. They match up well against the Packers and while they can’t quite match Green Bay’s on-tilt pinball scoring machine, their running game means they don’t have to. If they can use the run sprinkled in to control the pace and score just before halftime and/or just before the end of the game, that will also force the Packers to take chances with their limited number of possessions.

Fantasy owners need to make sure they’ve got Matt Forte plugged in. Sunday morning will be too late.

The winner of this game should be in the early driver’s seat for the division title. A Bears victory puts them 2 games up on Green Bay after two games and ensures at least a split head-to-head matchup with the flip side being played at Soldier Field later on. If the Packers win, they’ll be tied with Chicago 1-1, but have the tiebreaking edge head-to-head, 1-0.

With the Detroit Lions’ weak showing in their fingernail-scratching victory over the lowly Rams last week and the Vikings likely the cellar-dwellers, the early going would seem to indicate the two teams playing tonight are the class of their division. It’s actually more of a must-win for the Packers because starting any season 0-2 with 2 home losses makes the road – and road games ahead – that much more difficult.

Given the first week’s games and Mike McCarthy’s team coming off a loss at home and playing in front of their home crowd, they’ll have extra incentive. Cutler’s barbs at the Packers’ defense only gives them that much more motivation. Tough game to call, but so long as the “replacement” officials don’t miss another block in the back on a Randall “Tex” Cobb return, I’m thinking the final will be…
