The issue is “Settle”d: We recently brought you the news that popular running backs coach Jim Skipper would most likely not be returning to the Carolina Panthers. Friday, the Panthers took away any question about this by hiring John Settle, 45, as the new running backs coach.

For 20 years, Settle held the record as the all time leading rusher for Appalachian State. While he is now in second place in that statistic, he is still a few yards ahead of Armanti Edwards. He was an undrafted running back with the Atlanta Falcons for four years, including one Pro Bowl year, and spent two more years with the Washington Redskins. In that Pro Bowl year of 1988, he became the first undrafted running back to surpass 1000 yards in a season.

He has three years of experience in the NFL as an offensive assistant coach, but has spent the last four years as the running backs coach for Wisconsin.

Of all the coaching changes that have been taking place with the Carolina Panthers, there has been one that many fans have been paying careful attention to: the Running Backs Coach. This coaching position has been held by Jim Skipper since 2002, and has been one of the few spots on the team that has stayed consistently good over those years. Fans may fondly recall the success of Stephen Davis in 2003, or the fact that the Panthers even kept a strong running game in 2005 despite injuries that led to having to turn to Nick Goings, the team’s sixth string running back. More recently, of course, Skipper has helped to turn Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart into one of the most powerful tandems in the NFL. That, along with the advancement of Mike Goodson and Tyrell Sutton, has caused many fans to very much want Skipper to return to this position. (more…)
