When comparing the NFL to the PGA, I think the Carolina Panthers have found themselves a scratch golfer in general manager Dave Gettleman. I know we don’t have allot to analyze just yet, however, I think his draft strategy gives us some great insight.
The last two seasons we have watched Ron Rivera chop his way down the course usually ending up in the rough. I will agree he didn’t have many clubs as Hurney loaded him up with a very lopsided golf bag. It seemed like at times he had 5 drivers and no putter once he reached the green. He would start the season afraid to use the club needed, instead opting for tapping the ball down the fairway with an iron. Toward the end of the season trying desperately to catch up he would finally start to take more chances utilizing as many tools as possible. After a 13-19 record in the last two seasons he finds himself with a new partner in the game of captains choice.
Dave Gettleman is a scratch golfer with a nice collection of clubs after so many years of playing. We see that he does not take chances like Hurney. At times Hurney would try to bank a shot off of the barn, off the duck, around the tree and into the hole. More times than not Hurneys gambling/risk taking, did not pay off for the Panthers. Gettleman is a scratch golfer on the drafts par 5. He methodically went through each club needed starting with a 1wood in Star and a 3 wood in K.K. He would then go on to select a good size, high upside offensive lineman. Once on the green Dave two putted for a par with solid selections Barner and Klein.
I think the Panthers have finally found that stable force we have been looking for. Only time will tell, but I do feel these draft picks will pay big dividends in the future. The real question becomes does Dave play through or does he stop to help Rivera out of the woods? What would you do Panther fans?

A source of mine was at the Black and Blue Draft Preview Event tonight and Ron Rivera and Dave Gettleman may have tipped their hand in where they’re going in the draft. The term “Hog Molly” has been thrown around a lot by Dave Gettleman of late. It was used again this evening.

Gettleman’s of course referring to offensive or defensive linemen, when he uses “Hog Molly”. It’s been widely speculated that the Carolina Panthers are going to draft a defensive tackle with the number 14 pick. With all of the different needs that the Panthers have, many, including myself, didn’t think that defensive tackle was a sure thing for the Panthers at 14. They could go many different ways depending on who’s there when they pick. However, it appears they are only going one direction.

Gettleman, and the Giants, love defensive linemen. They almost seem to stock pile them like a person building a nuclear fall-out shelter would stock pile non-perishables; just when you thought they had enough, they draft Jason Pierre-Paul, just in case. It’s not like that’s all the Giants draft, but they’ve certainly been made a premium by the organization recently.

As much as I’m against them drafting a defensive tackle at 14 I think that it’s a foregone conclusion that it will happen. They probably have 2-3 guys at DT that they would feel comfortable drafting. There just probably aren’t going to be any offensive linemen at 14 that wouldn’t be a reach. But who knows? Maybe they come out and shock us all by taking DJ Fluker at 14? Doubtful, but he is certainly considered a Hog Molly.

I am certain that the one thing we can count on is that the Panthers will stand pat at 14. “Your board has integrity and you need to stick with your board and your work done,” Gettleman was quoted as saying at the Black and Blue Draft Preview Event. That, to me, all but cements them into picking at 14.

You can sit there and talk about how shrewd and prone to misdirection NFL teams are at draft time, but I can’t help but believe that Gettleman and Co. have their guy at 14 and they are next to certain that they will still be there when they pick. So get the troughs ready. It looks like we’re drafting a big boy tomorrow night.

When Dave Gettleman, former Pro Personnel Director for the Giants, current Carolina Panther’s general manager, walked through the door his first task was handling a salary cap situation that was less desirable than just about any in the league.

The Carolina Panthers were close to 16 million dollars over the NFL salary cap and needed to be below it once the league year started on March 12. Cuts followed, and fans watched as the new regime cut Chris Gamble, Ron Edwards, and fan-favorite James Anderson. Fans saw their prayers answered with the re-signings of defensive back Captain Munnerlyn, and defensive tackle Dwan Edwards.

More miraculous was the pay cut that veteran left tackle Jordan Gross took to stay with the team one more year. Gross’ restructure was a necessity, and fans were left to wonder if he would be released instead. Gettleman was quick to deliver again. He had come out of his corner swinging.

The Panthers stayed relatively quiet the first few days of NFL free agency. With no money to offer some of the bigger-name free agents the Panthers scoured the market for more value players than players commanding large salaries.

DJ Moore, former Chicago Bears defensive back, Drayton Florence, former Detroit Lions defensive back, and safety Mike Mitchell from Oakland were brought in to provide depth and challenge the rookies in a secondary that was much maligned in the earlier part of the 2012 campaign, but saw an upswing in the later part of the season. The Carolina Panthers were suddenly looking at a very capable secondary on paper, at least at the corner back position.

Showing his attention to detail and his attention to detail, Gettleman signed wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr., and former Giants receiver Domenik Hixon. Ted Ginn Jr. will most likely be the Panthers starting kick returner after head coach Ron Rivera buried Joe Adams underneath his dog house. Domenik Hixon was brought in specifically to be Louis Murphy’s replacement. While not as fast as Murphy (few receivers are), and injury prone, Hixon runs better routes and can actually catch. He is Louis Murphy 2.0.

Gettleman’s maneuvers were not simply ones that would get the Panthers players that could go out on the field and play on Sunday’s. He’s made it no secret that the Panthers, like the Giants, intend to build through the draft. He’s methodically planning for the seasons beyond 2013. And that is with or without Ron Rivera. He’ll have a tougher time of it next season. Decisions will have to made regarding Jon Beason, Deangelo Williams, Charles Godfrey, and even Charles Johnson. He’ll have to contend with Greg Hardy in the offseason, and he’ll need to be planning even further for keeping Cam Newton in Carolina for the foreseeable future.

Gettleman has walked into a mess that former GM Marty Hurney left when Richardson fired him. None of it seems to phase Gettleman. He’s standing on the firing line and taking precise, accurate shots at bringing this organization back to relevancy. He’s already done more, with less, than Marty Hurney has done since 2002-2003. He seems worth his salt. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how he drafts, and for what the future brings for the Carolina Panthers with him at the helm.
