Deadline passes, Panthers decide not to use franchise tag

After using the franchise tag to keep some of their big name players over the past few years, Marty Hurney and the Carolina Panthers decided to not tag this offseason, as the deadline to franchise a players has came and went earlier today. In season’s past the Cats have used the franchise tag to keep cornerstone players like center Ryan Kalil last season and then defensive end Julius Peppers and Jordan Gross in 2009 and 2008.

All in all though this isn’t to big of a deal for the Panthers. The team only has 10 free agents this offseason and the only one that could possibly warrant a franchise tag is tight end Jeremy Shockey and even that is probably a stretch. (more…)

Julius Peppers Waiting on Panthers

Well there’s a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel today. A taste of news that’s a little more reassuring this year than last.

Defensive end Julius Peppers‘ agent, Carl Carey, told the Charlotte Observer Thursday morning that Peppers is waiting for the Carolina Panthers to announce how they plan on handling his free agency before saying anything about his wishes.

Carey reiterated that Peppers’ concerns from last season “don’t currently exist.”

“I think it’s appropriate that we reserve our comments until after the Panthers’ organization has publicly announced their intentions regarding Julius’ impending free agency,” Carey said. “Julius feels good about being selected to his fifth Pro Bowl and is focusing on representing the Carolina Panthers in Miami.”

Thud! The Other Shoe Drops

Jordan Gross got his millions when he signed on the dotted line earlier today. That’s when the Carolina Panthers decided to play hard ball and placed the franchise tag on Julius Peppers.

After placing the franchise tag on their star defensive end Thursday, general manager Marty Hurney stuck with the most strict description of the rights of a franchise player:
