As usual, I’ll leave the play-by-play to other sites better suited to them. The Packers got out to a 13-0 lead at halftime and let the Bears lose the rest of the game. Ugly game for Bears fans.

Suffice it to say that Chicago self-destructed in this one and it started with trash-talking the Packers’ defense a few days ago. League Crybaby Jay Cutler was so overconfident after their game against the vaunted Colts defense that his already over-inflated ego had to taunt the team they were about to play.

I might just go look and find out what the Chicago newspapers say about him online tomorrow. He has yet to mature but he better learn from the experience of Clay Matthews and his four – yes, FOUR – sacks. He hit him numerous other times as well…all legal hits. Cutler was sacked 7 times on the night and yes, he continued his picky ways with tossing 4 interceptions.

Sept 13, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (22) is stopped by Green Bay Packers defenders during the first quarter at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

Looks like he made a donation for every Clay Matthews sack.

AR-12′s night was better, with 219 yards and a TD and a pick. The INT was a result of his receiver breaking off the route in a scramble and going away from the quarterback. When the QB is under duress, you need to come back to the football.

Both Rodgers and Cutler had an interception that was the result of that not happening. One of Cutler’s interceptions was on a mid-range throw to Earl Bennett, who stood there and let the ball come to him while Charles Woodson jumped in front of the pass for his 55th career interception.

What did we learn?

We learned Green Bay apparently CAN run the ball if they put their minds to it after all. Cedric Benson had 81 rushing and 35 receiving yards. I doubt he’s still around in many fantasy league waiver wires, but he might be around in some 10-team leagues, depending.

Speaking of RBs, the Bears’ Matt Forte left in the third quarter with his own Cedric Bensonmum (hat tip to Sir Alec Guiness as the blind butler in “Murder by Death”) – mimicking performance with an ankle injury. Early word is a sprained ankle but no details other than that so far.

The Bears offense ran up the score with 41 against Indy last week. Conclusions:

1) The Indy defense was neglected in the top end of the 2012 draft and MLB Pat Angerer is out. They’re horrible.

2) The Bears’ offensive line seems every bit as bad as last year’s was.

3) The Packers’ defense is a little better than thought in the preseason, but they played over their heads tonight…against a bad line. Brandon Marshall dropped a wide-open perfect pass in the end zone. In the second quarter, the Packers ran a successful fake FG out of the blue with a shuttle pass inside from the holder to TE Tom Crabtree who came across the formation behind the line, took the ball that holder Tim Masthay flipped to him around the right end and didn’t stop until he hit paydirt 27 yards later.

Subtract the extra 4 if they kick the FG, and it’s a 19-17 game. That’s two plays completely blown by the Bears. And if the 44-yard would-be attempt had missed, the Bears win 17-16. So, what happened was more a confluence of events that allowed the defense to shine than anything else. They were playing with an early lead against a team with a bad line.

4) The Packers really are mortal. After 4 turnovers and the exit of Forte from the game, they only had 23 points and Rodgers was pressured at times. AR-12′s a good scrambler who buys time to throw. The offense still isn’t running that smoothly (for the Packers) and the long interlude until their game next weekend will help answer those questions since they’ll have extra time to prepare.

At least this week, I got off to a 1-0 start since I had the Pack winning by ten. Woo, look at me going out on a limb…

The first game of NFL week two brings us a game that could have ramification down the road as NFC North divisional foes face off in Green Bay, Wisconsin tonight. The Chicago Bears (1-0) visit a wounded Green Bay Packers (0-1) team.

DAAA BEARSSSSS have found some explosiveness on offense with their WR pickups in the offseason. Brandon Marshall’s prowess has been established and 6’5″ Alshon Jeffery, their 2nd-round pick from South Carolina, had a nice first game against Indy with 80 receiving yards including a 42-yard TD.

They have as good a mix of WRs as anyone and actually compare nicely with the Packers’ top few. Marshall and Jeffery are big, physical guys that can “play above the goalpost” as it were, snagging passes at the highest point that the smaller DBs can’t reach. That takes accuracy and timing. Cutler and Marshall already know each other from Denver and Jeffery is working his way into things nicely.

Add into the mix the not-often-targeted but highly dangerous open-field runner Devin Hester. We know he can score from anywhere already and when you’ve got a complete back like Matt Forte with very soft hands and 4.4 speed, and the Bears have plenty of weapons to move the ball against last year’s 32nd-ranked defense.

The biggest thing to watch in terms of gameplanning will be how many times do the Bears try to run it? Forte is a top-ten RB with his skill set and the Packers’ defense gave up 5.8 yards/rushing attempt against the 49′ers with <del datetime="2012-09-13T14:33:07+00:00">Al</del> Frank Gore getting 112 yards on just 16 carries.

Aaron Rodgers was the Packers’ leading rusher with 27 yards on 5 attempts while Cedric Benson gained 18 on 9 carries. The Packers never have been a running team in recent years and don’t appear to care to try doing it now. With their QB, TE, and WRs, why would they?

Sep 09, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte (22) rushes the ball past Indianapolis Colts defensive back Vontae Davis (23) during the second quarter at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

The answer for the Bears is controlling the clock and keeping AR-12 off the field. It’s kind of obvious, yes, but it’s what the Niners did to beat them last week. Clay Matthews had 2.5 sacks, but he’s a known quantity and the Packers’ D lacks another consistent pass-rusher. Running the ball effectively has the side effect of slowing down the pass rush and opening up the play-action pass, something Cutler is good at.

Look for the Bears to try to establish the run early, despite some of the jawboning Cutler has done about the Packers secondary the past couple of days. Running the ball keeps the clock ticking and keeps AR-12 and his weapons on the sideline while resting your own defense. The same gameplan has been used for 15 years against Peyton Manning and Tom Brady…usually unsuccessfully.

With the Packers’ defense having been so bad last season and showing little sign of improvement so far this season, that’s exactly what the Bears will plan on doing. They match up well against the Packers and while they can’t quite match Green Bay’s on-tilt pinball scoring machine, their running game means they don’t have to. If they can use the run sprinkled in to control the pace and score just before halftime and/or just before the end of the game, that will also force the Packers to take chances with their limited number of possessions.

Fantasy owners need to make sure they’ve got Matt Forte plugged in. Sunday morning will be too late.

The winner of this game should be in the early driver’s seat for the division title. A Bears victory puts them 2 games up on Green Bay after two games and ensures at least a split head-to-head matchup with the flip side being played at Soldier Field later on. If the Packers win, they’ll be tied with Chicago 1-1, but have the tiebreaking edge head-to-head, 1-0.

With the Detroit Lions’ weak showing in their fingernail-scratching victory over the lowly Rams last week and the Vikings likely the cellar-dwellers, the early going would seem to indicate the two teams playing tonight are the class of their division. It’s actually more of a must-win for the Packers because starting any season 0-2 with 2 home losses makes the road – and road games ahead – that much more difficult.

Given the first week’s games and Mike McCarthy’s team coming off a loss at home and playing in front of their home crowd, they’ll have extra incentive. Cutler’s barbs at the Packers’ defense only gives them that much more motivation. Tough game to call, but so long as the “replacement” officials don’t miss another block in the back on a Randall “Tex” Cobb return, I’m thinking the final will be…

Week One gives us this gem of a game: a preview of the probable 2012 NFC Championship Game.

But oh, how the roles have changed since each franchise’s golden years.

Those Packer teams of the 1960s…the power sweep and semi-famous video of Vince Lombardi drawing lines on a chalkboard and screaming something about alleys and seals.

He was dressed like it was cold out so maybe they were trying to trap seals in an alley? I think Lombardi did say something a different time about “clubbing those guys” so I’m not quite sure what they were up to.

Anyway, they used to win games by grinding it out and with Bart Starr’s accurate throws and taking care of the football while playing very solid defense. They would just flat wear you out by the end of the game.

Those Niner teams of the 1980′s…and Bill Walsh’s invention of the West Coast Offense to horizontally spread the field with crossing patterns, screens, flares, and slants to open up the running game for draw plays. As the talent at WR grew, so did the explosiveness of the offense under a mobile quarterback.

Nowadays, the roles have completely reversed. It’s glitz versus grind as the high-octane Green Bay Packers hosts the lunchpail-toting San Francisco 49ers. Aaron Rodgers has that high-end arm strength that Montana never had and stretch it further downfield, but the idea is the same. Meanwhile, steady QB play, a strong running game, a tough defense, and taking care of the ball all are things today’s Niners and the old Packers share.

When Green Bay has the ball

The Green Bay offense is very much like Air Coryell with Dan Fouts and the San Diego Chargers if I had to pin a team of the past on them precisely. Pass, pass, pass some more. Run as an afterthought or on 3rd and an inch. And do a bootleg pass on half of those downs, too. They have weapons in places most teams don’t even have places it almost seems. TE Jermichael Finley is a top-3 TE in the NFL. WR Greg Jennings is a deep threat and top-ten WR. Donald Driver is declining, but can still contribute. Oh – Jordy Nelson too by the way in case you’re interested.

The guy I see starting to come into his own, however, is WR Randall “Tex” Cobb. No, not THAT “Tex” Cobb. Same name, my nickname for him. My column, my rules. GOT IT?!?

Now that we have that straight, the Packers’ Te…er Randall Cobb is explosive in his own right on the gridiron. In his first game and opening kickoff of their first game last season, if memory serves as it was, he returned a kickoff 107 yards for a TD and I think also had a TD reception that game as well. The kid has the ability to make big things happen and with Finley and Jennings already prowling the field and without a weakness at receiver anywhere, a QB like AR-12 is going to pick you apart, period. Unless….

…unless a guy like Aldon Smith can consistently put some heat on him. Or Ahmad Brooks. Or Ray McDonald. Or Justin Smith. Actually, it’s probably going to take a good game from all of the above to get Rodgers off his game to limit the damage he’ll do. Maybe Patrick Willis & Co. can pop out a fumble, or the pressure can force an errant throw or even strip him of the ball. It’s happened before and could happen again.

That’s the only way to beat a team like the Packers on offense. Disrupt, disrupt, disrupt. Never let AR-12 feel comfortable. Don’t let him get settled into his rhythm. The Niners have a decent secondary but not even the Jets corners can cover all day. You HAVE to get pressure, or you lose. It’s why pass-rushers are so coveted at the top of the draft these days. Remember Seattle and the Bruce Irvin pick? It’s that big of a deal, and it’s how teams win championships these days – pass, and stop the pass.

When San Francisco has the ball

Part of only about a handful of teams that rely heavily upon the run these days, the Niners have several weapons out of the backfield to choose from. Frank Gore will still see more carries than anyone else, I think they’re going to start sliding a few more carries Kendall Hunter’s way this year. Gore’s aging and has been a workhorse for years now. Oregon rookie LaMichael James might be used to take advantage of a defense that’s lost a step from fatigue, making him play even faster than he is but is elusive in any case and offers a home-run threat that Gore doesn’t have. Former Giant Brandon Jacobs makes for another big back in reserve.

They also went looking for lots of help at WR and found an aging Randy Moss. He’s not the guy that demands bracket coverage like he did 5 or 10 years ago, but he has a way of making deep TD receptions look easy. Michael Crabtree has yet to approach his full potential and if he can’t break out this year I don’t think he ever will. I think Mario Manningham could really blossom as a Niner. TE and freakish physical specimen Vernon Davis provides the deep threat from an unlikely place with sub-4.4 speed.

Defensively, future Hall of Fame CB Charles Woodson may extend his career at safety but could still draw coverage duty. The Packers lean on B.J. Raji to clog the middle while LB A.J. Hawk makes tackles in the running game. Clay Matthews is the only established and legitimate pass-rusher on the defense, so the Packers invested heavily on defense in the draft. DE Jerel Worthy and LB Nick Perry need to be disruptive for the Packers to shake up the Niners’ passing attack, but they certainly can’t hang their hat on doing so.

Both teams are equal in the special teams, with Cobb of the Packers and Ted Ginn, Jr. of the 49ers both being guys who have demonstrated the ability to be a threat in the return game.

Outcome? The smart money is on the Packers at home but conditions favor the 49ers. The Packers have some rookie pieces on defense where the Niners have the deepest team overall in the NFL I think. If the Packers can ride the emotion of their home opener to an early double-digit lead, it could derail the running game in the second half and force a shootout with Smith – something he doesn’t do well and the defense doesn’t allow to happen. The longer San Fran hangs around, the better the chance they have of controlling the pace of the game and being on the right end of the final score.

SF 27, GB 24
