In a move as under-the-radar as ditching a high-proflie free agent can be, the Jacksonville Jaguars released WR Laurent Robinson today as the 2013 NFL free agency signing period revs up in full gear on day two.

The move seems to at least attempt to do something positive with their embattled QB situation, apparently. 2011 top-ten pick Blaine Gabbert has been awful both his seasons and will face off with ex-Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne in training camp and could – perhaps – lose his job, depending on the situation.

The team paid handsomely for Robinson’s services last season with a 5-year $32.5 million deal when Robinson had a “breakout” 1,000-yard season in 2011 with the Dallas Cowboys. They have Tony Romo, however, and Romo puts up great stats for the first 58 minutes of the game. Gabbert? Not so much. At all.

WR Cecil Shorts, a second-year pro (last season) out of college powerhouse Mount Union, had his own “breakout” year with 979 receiving yards and 7 TDs, leaving little left to go around with Robinson and rookie WR Justin Blackmon on the roster. Robinson spent a good part of the time injured last season with concussions and I’m sure that went into the thinking as well.

On a personal note, I’ll always root for Cecil because of two reasons: I have a 2 1/2 yr-old cat named Cecil so I noticed Shorts’ production earlier than most people did in my fantasy leagues and was able to pick him up off waivers in 2 of those 3 leagues, one of which, I won.

So, with his combo of names…cats are many things, but they’re not exactly TALL, right?…and with his production coming along, he’s a beast!

Okay, okay sorry. But he IS poised to be a 1,000-yd WR in 2013 and Blackmon shouldn’t be too far behind him by the time opening day rolls around and the Jags wanted to dump his salary; they’ll deal with the ‘cap hit’ in the short term. Laurent’s still well into his $14 million guaranteed money anyway, so the team simply freed the roster spot in essence.

RB Jahvid Best of the Detroit Lions had to call it a career after very little active NFL time because of concussions and the problems and instances have been greatly magnified by a number of news reports on them in the past year – all of them bad. There’s lingering disagreement between Robinson and the team as to his current health, however, so this story may have more to go. He reportedly had 4 different concussions and he claims he still isn’t healthy.

Sounds like nobody will be picking him up anytime soon and given the tone I’m hearing, legal action could be brewing. It’s early early yet…but this is huge news in the broader issue of TBI – Traumatic Brain Injury – and the ongoing process in the courts on the issue between the NFLPA and NFL.

Robinson vows to be “ready very soon” for any potential suitors and looks forward to the season.

I seem to recall similar preseason sentiments from Jahvid Best last year.

Jacksonville Jaguars star Maurice Jones-Drew and owner Shad Khan don’t get along. That much is clear.

Khan said today that “the train is leaving the station. Run, get on it,” alluding to the holdout running back. He has 2 years left on a deal that pays him $4.5 million this year and $5 million the next. “Pocket Hercules” knows that running backs are generally considered washed-up at age 30, and he’s already 27 with a lot of tread-wear on him. He may never get a chance at a more lucrative deal and everyone knows it.

It’s generally thought that he will have little choice but to report to camp eventually since he’s got two years remaining on it. With another great season under his belt, he’ll have more leverage next offseason.

While it’s questionable to think that Khan would be open to a trade, it might be possible that some team out there may believe a running back of his caliber may be what they need to put them into the playoffs and/or into the Super Bowl. The Jags are rebuilding and still need talent at a lot of positions, and pride being what it is, a trade might not be such an impossibility.

A few come to mind immediately.

With Ryan Matthews being an injury risk and losing FB Mike Tolbert to the Carolina Panthers, the San Diego Chargers might be willing to make a deal if the price is right, but that price would be pretty steep…a first-rounder in the 2013 draft at the very least.

The Atlanta Falcons were willing to jump up and grab Julio Jones a couple of years ago and that appears to be paying off. With RB Michael Turner having a lot of wear himself, they could conceivably make such a trade. Turner and MJD are interchangeable and Jones-Drew has a broader skill-set. They’d have to give up probably a first, a third, and probably a fifth-round pick straight up or trade Turner plus a 3rd for MJD.

The New Orleans Saints will have their full complement of picks for 2013 after Bountygate. Depending on their perception of Mark Ingram’s durability, the could package Ingram, sell him as a much younger back with fresh legs, and bundle a 3rd or 4th round pick with him in exchange for an outstandingly consistent runner that won’t be called upon to carry the already high-octane Saints offense.

The Denver Broncos running game has struggled, and with a small window in Peyton Manning’s waning years, Johns Elway and Fox are probably secretly salivating at the idea of adding a guy like Pocket Hercules. Imagine he and Manning in the same offense! John Fox does love the running game and adding him would give them balance.

With the animosity between Khan and Maurice Jones-Drew, I suspect there are some “secret” phone calls outbound from Jacksonville as I type this…just to put the feelers out and let the brass do some due diligence.

Arizona Cardinals – Kevin Kolb and John Skelton are playing a nice game of “hot potato” with the starting gig. “I don’t want it – YOU take it!” That seems to be the mantra in Glendale, Arizona in 2012. This is what happens when you spend a “Glob for Kolb” after 4 career starts on a highly talented team. You saw him at his best in Philly…they had all the pieces around him he needed. LT Jason Peters (pre-injury). RB Michael Westbrook (at the time). Targets like DeSean Jackson and rookie Jeremy Maclin, back in 2010. TE Brent Celek. Ironically the Cardinals have arguably a better pair of starting wideouts, pending rookie Michael Floyd producing anything…but it’s a tad difficult for a rookie WR to impact the game when that same QB is BEING impacted by defenders. After the game, Raiders’ DE Tommy Kelly expanded on his comment of “That boy is scared!” he was heard to be saying as he was coming off the field on 4th down. He basically said that whenever defenders closed in, Kolb would be looking at the officials instead of his hot receiver or checkdowns. If that’s the case, they’d be better off installing the wildcat as their ordinary offense. If I were the Arizona owner, I’d cut Kolb and move on. Suffice it to say, the Arizona Cardinals should be looking for a passer in the top 5 of next year’s draft. Skelton looks to win the job by default and Kolb will be gone by this time next year.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Blaine Gabbert is marginally improving from last season but still has a long way to go to be even a mediocre NFL starting QB. My feeling is that he never will, and Chad Henne might well be pulling the trigger as their starter if not in game one, sometime during the season. In reality, Gabbert probably will start on opening day. Young QBs CAN get 3-4 years to grow into the role if they show signs of improvement, but I still wonder if Gabbert has it in him, despite a good preseason so far. I hope for his sake that he does, but as things are going now, they’re going to have to bring in another young arm next spring and reset. It has been years since the Jags’ offense has scared anyone (except their own coaches) and Henne at least has experience as a starter but injuries in part kept him from showing the Miami Dolphins that he could be the guy. Speaking of the Dolphins…

Miami Dolphins – This team actually is one of the deepest teams in the NFL at quarterback. They have former Jaguars’ QB David Garrard, whom the Jags pulled yet another idiot move letting go…even if his back was bad last season. Jax wound up signing Miami’s old cast-off, the aforementioned Chad Henne, to back up and push Gabbert. Garrard’s chances of starting are close to zero now due to a freak injury sustained at home in his swimming pool. Matt Moore went an incredible 6-3 as a starter for a team that won only 7 games last year but has been having some trouble picking up the new system under Joe Philbin and Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman. Since rookie Ryan Tannehill’s college Head Coach WAS Mike Sherman, he has more athletic ability in his pinky finger than does Matt Moore, and has out-played Moore in the preseason, Tannehill looks to be the starter but nothing is official yet. In the loss against the Panthers, Moore only went 5-of-15 for 57 yards and Tannehill didn’t fare that much better with 11-of-23 for 100 yards. However, by my count, Tannehill had 4 passes batted down at the line and one dropped pass; he might’ve been 16 of 23. The o-line played atrocious football against the Panthers with 37 yards rushing the entire game and their longest rushing play was 8 yards. Both QBs had defenders in their faces much of the game, but Moore’s second-team played better against the Panther’s seconds than the firsts and firsts did. That’s not good news for whatever QB starts, but points even more to Tannehill starting opening day…he runs a 4.6-40 and one of the good things about him coming out of college was his ability to throw on the run. From what I’ve seen so far, whoever starts will be doing a lot of that and coach Philbin reiterated today that he hasn’t settled on a starter. The only case that can be made for Moore is that if Tannehill isn’t in there, he can’t get shell-shocked by an offensive line that has talent but hasn’t yet gelled.

Tennessee Titans – Jake Locker has taken the “old-school” path thus far, having been drafted in 2011 and sitting a year behind veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck. The first preseason game had Locker looking on track to possibly unseat Hasselbeck as planned, but a poor outing going 4-of-11 for 21 whole yards in their 30-7 win over Tampa Bay raised questions about his readiness to be a starter. That’s less than two yards per ATTEMPT. It’s pretty bad when a QB’s yds/att is a number even a running back would puke over if it were his rushing yards per attempt. Locker also did everything wrong you could possibly think of in throwing his interception…he rolled out, threw across his body, across the field (a top no-no), and off his back foot. A mobile quarterback with space in front of him did this. *cue DRAGNET theme song* DUMB!
