Burney signed with the Panthers as an undrafted rookie free agent and almost played himself into a roster spot on the 53 man squad but ended up not making the cut. However, I am sure the Panthers are ecstatic about getting Burney back because he could play an important role on this team down the road, as the depth at the cornerback position is very scarce.

A few more weeks learning the system and playing on the practice squad could be just what Burney needs to continue to improve and eventually make an impact for the Panthers.

Outside of Burney the Panthers signed wide receiver Darvin Adams, center Jeff Byers, tight end Greg Smith, linebacker Lawrence Wilson, defensive end Thomas Keiser, guard Bryant Browning, center Jeff Byers and running back Josh Vaughan rounding out there squad.

The team signed 6 players to future contracts. Of the six, Jacob Bender, Tommie Duhart, Trent Guy, Josh Vaughan, and Sean Ware were previously on Carolina’s practice squad.

Louis Ellis, on the other hand, spent the 2009 season on the practice squad of the Miami Dolphins.

Bulking up the defensive line are Duhart and Ellis, and Ware will join the Panthers linebackers crew. Trent Guy, Josh Vaughan and Jacob Bender will join the offense at WR, RB, and T respectively.

These contracts are “future” because though they are signed, they are not officially on the roster until the beginning of the next league year.

The roster is comprised of running back Josh Vaughan, cornerback R.J. Stanford, wide receiver Trent Guy, fullback Rashawn Jackson, linebacker Sean Ware, and defensive tackle Corvey Irvin. The team’s newcomers are offensive guards Shawn Murphy and Dan Santucci.

Murphy was a fourth-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008, while Santucci was a seventh-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in in 2009.
