The Panthers just recently signed free agent defensive end Jyles Tucker. Tucker has spent his entire young career with the Chargers. He mostly played outside linebacker in San Diego’s 3-4 defensive scheme, but has the ability to play defensive end in a 4-3 system. However, Tucker was cut before the start of this past season and did not play at all in the NFL last year. It almost seems like coach Rivera is trying to build a defense with Chargers rejects. First he signed Atwan Applewhite, who proved to be versatile and could play multiple positions, but didn’t really make much of impact no matter where he lined up. Then he signed Seyi Ajirotutu, who was buried behind receivers on the Charger depth chart. He then proceeded to sign a couple DT’s of the Charger practice squad, who made just about as much an impact as Jimmy Clausen did this year.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Ron Rivera and I think he can do good things in Carolina, but if he’s planning on fixing our defensive problems by signing a bunch of his former players who served as backups, then we’re going to be in for a long season. Let’s hope that we’ll start to see some free agent signings that can make an impact by the time next season starts.
