With WR Greg Jennings still looking for a home, the Philadelphia Eagles decided instead to trade for Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ WR Arrelious Benn and a seventh-round pick in April’s draft in exchange for a sixth-round pick and a conditional 2014 draft choice. Benn has spent 3 full seasons in the NFL and has yet to hit the thousand-yard receiving mark. For his career.

He was Tampa Bay’s second-round draft pick in 2010 but never has been much of a force and certainly not someone the opponent’s defense has to game-plan for. His best season with Tampa was his second season, the 2011 campaign, when he had 30 receptions for 441 yards and 3 TDs. He missed half of last season with injuries and started in but a single contest. He had 4 catches for 26 yards for the entire year and is obviously deemed expendable by the franchise that nabbed star WR Vincent Jackson during free agency last season.

It looks like Philadelphia signed him on as a reserve, since their dynamic WR tandem of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin remains intact. The Eagles appear to be focusing on revamping their defense as they were soft last year and are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4, requiring a different personnel mix.

Nov 27, 2011; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Jets tight end Dustin Keller (81) drags Buffalo Bills defensive back Justin Rogers (26) and free safety Jairus Byrd (31) into the end zone for a touchdown during the third quarter at MetLife Stadium.
The Miami Dolphins have been the team that has made the biggest splash in free agency so far this season, having signed WR Mike Wallace, LB Dannell Ellerbe, and LB Phillip Wheeler prior to today as well as keeping WR Brian Hartline in the fold with a new contract.

Embattled Dolphins’ GM Jeff Ireland is trying to save his job and spending worse than a drunken sailor to do so. Today, we discover some of the terms of the Mike Wallace deal, and he will cost the team over $17 million against the salary cap in 2014. The only more expensive WR in that year is Larry Fitzgerald.

They signed former New York Jets TE Dustin Keller to replace departed TE Anthony Fasano while upgrading the position at the same time.

The team also added former St. Louis Rams WR Brandon Gibson with a 3-year deal. Within one off-season, they’ve gone from being the most WR-needy team in the NFL to one of the most stacked at the position today.

Sept. 23, 2012; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb (4) during the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals defeated the Eagles 27 – 6. Mandatory Credit: Jennifer Stewart-USA TODAY Sports

Meanwhile in Arizona, $11 million per year QB Kevin “Korn on the” Kolb was released primarily due to costs, but his durability is also a concern. Their issues on the offensive line certainly didn’t help Kolb’s cause, but it isn’t clear that the team won’t re-sign him later at a greatly reduced rate depending on the interest in Kolb from other teams. Just a shrewd guess here, but something tells me other NFL teams won’t be beating down his agent’s door.

The Cardinals have Brian Hoyer and Drew Stanton at QB as-is, and it’s quite possible another QB-needy team like the Jets or the Buffalo Bills could give him a good look. Since the Cardinals have pick 7 in next month’s draft and Buffalo the eighth, the Bills cannot count on West Virginia QB Geno Smith, who had a very impressive workout during W.V.’s Pro Day yesterday, being around at #8 overall. The chess match is on, it appears.

Too bad the Carolina Panthers don’t have the cap room to sign Greg Jennings. I sure wish they did.

Arizona Cardinals – Kevin Kolb and John Skelton are playing a nice game of “hot potato” with the starting gig. “I don’t want it – YOU take it!” That seems to be the mantra in Glendale, Arizona in 2012. This is what happens when you spend a “Glob for Kolb” after 4 career starts on a highly talented team. You saw him at his best in Philly…they had all the pieces around him he needed. LT Jason Peters (pre-injury). RB Michael Westbrook (at the time). Targets like DeSean Jackson and rookie Jeremy Maclin, back in 2010. TE Brent Celek. Ironically the Cardinals have arguably a better pair of starting wideouts, pending rookie Michael Floyd producing anything…but it’s a tad difficult for a rookie WR to impact the game when that same QB is BEING impacted by defenders. After the game, Raiders’ DE Tommy Kelly expanded on his comment of “That boy is scared!” he was heard to be saying as he was coming off the field on 4th down. He basically said that whenever defenders closed in, Kolb would be looking at the officials instead of his hot receiver or checkdowns. If that’s the case, they’d be better off installing the wildcat as their ordinary offense. If I were the Arizona owner, I’d cut Kolb and move on. Suffice it to say, the Arizona Cardinals should be looking for a passer in the top 5 of next year’s draft. Skelton looks to win the job by default and Kolb will be gone by this time next year.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Blaine Gabbert is marginally improving from last season but still has a long way to go to be even a mediocre NFL starting QB. My feeling is that he never will, and Chad Henne might well be pulling the trigger as their starter if not in game one, sometime during the season. In reality, Gabbert probably will start on opening day. Young QBs CAN get 3-4 years to grow into the role if they show signs of improvement, but I still wonder if Gabbert has it in him, despite a good preseason so far. I hope for his sake that he does, but as things are going now, they’re going to have to bring in another young arm next spring and reset. It has been years since the Jags’ offense has scared anyone (except their own coaches) and Henne at least has experience as a starter but injuries in part kept him from showing the Miami Dolphins that he could be the guy. Speaking of the Dolphins…

Miami Dolphins – This team actually is one of the deepest teams in the NFL at quarterback. They have former Jaguars’ QB David Garrard, whom the Jags pulled yet another idiot move letting go…even if his back was bad last season. Jax wound up signing Miami’s old cast-off, the aforementioned Chad Henne, to back up and push Gabbert. Garrard’s chances of starting are close to zero now due to a freak injury sustained at home in his swimming pool. Matt Moore went an incredible 6-3 as a starter for a team that won only 7 games last year but has been having some trouble picking up the new system under Joe Philbin and Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman. Since rookie Ryan Tannehill’s college Head Coach WAS Mike Sherman, he has more athletic ability in his pinky finger than does Matt Moore, and has out-played Moore in the preseason, Tannehill looks to be the starter but nothing is official yet. In the loss against the Panthers, Moore only went 5-of-15 for 57 yards and Tannehill didn’t fare that much better with 11-of-23 for 100 yards. However, by my count, Tannehill had 4 passes batted down at the line and one dropped pass; he might’ve been 16 of 23. The o-line played atrocious football against the Panthers with 37 yards rushing the entire game and their longest rushing play was 8 yards. Both QBs had defenders in their faces much of the game, but Moore’s second-team played better against the Panther’s seconds than the firsts and firsts did. That’s not good news for whatever QB starts, but points even more to Tannehill starting opening day…he runs a 4.6-40 and one of the good things about him coming out of college was his ability to throw on the run. From what I’ve seen so far, whoever starts will be doing a lot of that and coach Philbin reiterated today that he hasn’t settled on a starter. The only case that can be made for Moore is that if Tannehill isn’t in there, he can’t get shell-shocked by an offensive line that has talent but hasn’t yet gelled.

Tennessee Titans – Jake Locker has taken the “old-school” path thus far, having been drafted in 2011 and sitting a year behind veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck. The first preseason game had Locker looking on track to possibly unseat Hasselbeck as planned, but a poor outing going 4-of-11 for 21 whole yards in their 30-7 win over Tampa Bay raised questions about his readiness to be a starter. That’s less than two yards per ATTEMPT. It’s pretty bad when a QB’s yds/att is a number even a running back would puke over if it were his rushing yards per attempt. Locker also did everything wrong you could possibly think of in throwing his interception…he rolled out, threw across his body, across the field (a top no-no), and off his back foot. A mobile quarterback with space in front of him did this. *cue DRAGNET theme song* DUMB!

The biggest news from preseason contests so far this week isn’t so much who did what but who got lost.

Indeed, Kevin “Cornless” Kolb and <del datetime="2012-08-18T17:12:17+00:00">Red</del> John Skelton are battling things out in Arizona to see just who can undercut the other and play worse. Kolb is beginning to remind me of Blaine Gabbert without the poise, and Skelton looks like the job will fall into his lap because he bites it the least. Its been reported that Raiders DT Tommy Kelly came off the field saying “That boy’s scared!” – referring to Cornless.

Hardly a ringing endorsement for the guy, even if it IS jabberjawing from the opposing team. But that’s not even the worst news for Cardinals fans.

Pro-bowler and star left tackle Levi Brown injured his arm (Triceps) in the Oakland game and early indications are that it could end his season. It’s horrible news for any team to lose your starting LT, but with the poor play Cardinals QBs have demonstrated thus far, it’s just going from bad to worse in Glendale. Add to that the fact a man was shot in the parking lot after an argument after the contest and the whole evening qualifies as a disaster for the Cardinals on and off the field.

The Raiders didn’t escape unscathed themselves. Backup QB Matt Leinart left the game after a late hit from Ricky Lumpkin. WR Jacoby Ford injured his foot and we await details on that.

In other games, veteran RB LeGarrette Blount of the Bucs injured his groin, but it doesn’t appear to be too serious, according to Head Coach Greg Schiano. Panthers’ RB Jonathan Stewart, who just days ago signed a lucrative long-term contract, left the Miami game with a calf injury but walked off the field under his own power.

The Baltimore Ravens seem to be a hard-luck team this year. After losing reigning Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs for most if not all of the season in a pickup basketball game during the summer, DT Ryan McBean had surgery to repair a broken ankle suffered last week and will be lost for the year. The defending champion New York Giants have multiple interior defenders either injured or unable to play for medical reasons.

This, after only two preseason games?

Owie.
