Now that all the first week’s preseason games are over with, some players are making a name already while others languish.

The good:

Andrew Luck looks like the real deal. Surprise!

The Rams announced after their initial preseason contest that they would not be playing a game in London in 2013 or 2014, but will still take on the New England Patriots there at Wembley Stadium on October 28th of this year. They got blown out by the Colts, 38-3, the previous day. This is not what I expect from a Jeff Fisher-led squad especially with the improvements they’ve made to their roster the past season.

However, the Rams did have a bright spot in rookie CB Janoris Jenkins. He covered very well and had a chance to make a play or two but was just unlucky – he had position to make an interception or at least defend the pass, but the bullet pass went through his hands and wound up being caught by Colts rookie T.Y. Hilton in a nice play where Hilton had to really focus on the deflected pass.

So far, it looks like both Jenkins and Hilton are the real deals, and both teams desperately need their contributions. If Jenkins can adjust a bit more but continue on his current trajectory, the Rams should field one of the better CB tandems in the league with Cortland Finnegan on the other side.

T.Y. Hilton made several catches last night and his 4.3-speed and return ability should provide a nice spark for this very young offense. He’s very elusive, has good hands, and plays bigger than his 5-10 size would suggest. If he can attack from the slot, he could be a dangerous weapon.

Aug 11, 2012; Seattle, WA, USA; Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker (10) runs and looks for an open receiver during the 1st half against the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE

Titans quarterback Jake Locker appears to be winning his camp battle with Matt Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck, 36, has waning skills and threw two interceptions last weekend while Locker had zero. Reports are that he’s consistently outplayed the veteran placeholder and at this rate, Jake will be starting week one.

Miami Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill showed poise that pretty much everyone – myself EXCLUDED – didn’t think he’d show so soon. Many analysts expressed surprise that he looked so good under the circumstances…he was injured last season at Texas A&M and only had around 2 and a half years of experience at QB since he’s a converted WR. I knew that he’d come into camp TEACHING THE OTHER QBs Mike Sherman’s system since the man was his college Head Coach. I’ve been saying from since he was drafted that he’d be starting FROM WEEK ONE (go back and check if you want) and the injury to David Garrard could well be the catalyst that gives Tannehill some playing time in order to vault over Matt Moore for the job. Moore has always been a poor practice player (although his effort has never been in question). Ryan showed he’s not afraid to throw into tight spaces, and I’m sure a guy like Arizona Cardinals’ HC Ken Whisenhunt would kill to have Tannehill in his fold. See below under “the bad.”

The bad:

Colts’ 2011 leading tackler MLB Pat Angerer is out for at least six weeks with a fractured foot. With the Colts’ Lucky offense looking good albeit in their initial preseason contest, this has to be of grave concern. The Colts’ defense hasn’t been known as stout against the run in recent years and this invites opponents to make the Colts show them they can stop the run…especially because running the ball means keeping Andrew Luck on the sidelines.

Do we see a similar strategy at work here as has been attempted for the past 12 years by Indy’s opponents? I think so!

Aug 10, 2012; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe (92) is blocked by Arizona Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein (63) in the first half at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE

Chief’s ultra-gifted rookie DT Dontari Poe is continuing his old college ways – in other words, he’s not shown much on the field. He started out as the second-string nose tackle entering camp with the hopes he could show that he belongs as the starter. At 350 pounds and 4.9-speed, he’s easily the most gifted NT on the team physically. The bad news? He’s now working with the third team. NOT the direction GM Scott Pioli and HC Romeo Crennel had in mind when they nabbed him with their top overall pick.

The Cowboys and the Raiders offenses looked horrible last night. The Cowboys managed only 210 total yards from scrimmage in a forgettable 3-0 victory. Dez Bryant was, yet again, getting “nagging” injuries before even this game during camp and his short career has been plagued by them. The lone bright spot was that Darren McFadden, the Raiders #4 overall draft pick four years ago, looked completely recovered from the foot injury that ended his season last year when he was the NFL’s leading rusher before getting injured. He only had 2 carries for 20 yards, but his 16-yard scamper showed his moves are back.

Good thing too, since Carson Palmer was 3 of 6 with an INT. Thanks, Hue Jackson.

The Arizona Cardinals apparently have two gun-shy signal-callers. First, I was never sold on Kevin Kolb, having had only a few starts in Philly before the Cardinals, desperate to replace retired Kurt Warner, ponied up a “Glob for Kolb” with a huge contract only to see him out-played (or “sucking” less) by journeyman <del datetime="2012-08-14T15:45:36+00:00">Red</del> John Skelton, who makes about 30 times less money than Kolb. After the Cards’ initial preseason loss to KC, Whisenhunt lamented that they had one-on-one coverage multiple times downfield, but the QBs were not trying to get them the ball. With All-Pro WR Larry Fitzgerald on one side and a very physically talented first-round pick in Notre Dame rookie Michael Floyd on the other, I’d have to like my chances throwing it up for either of those two guys to haul in at the highest point.

Skelton went 3 of 6 or 35 yards and an INT while Kevin Kolb went 1 for 5 for 21 yards. Looks like the Cardinals are going to lean more and more on their running game as both their quarterbacks continue their gun-shy ways from last year.

With six games down in the first preseason week of the NFL and ten remaining ones, there’s plenty to be watching for in this weekend’s games. Here are some of the bigger things that begin taking shape this tonight:

July 29, 2012; Cortland, NY, USA; New York Jets wide receiver Stephen Hill (84) makes a catch during training camp at SUNY Cortland. Mandatory Credit: Rich Barnes-US PRESSWIRE

Jets @ Bengals, 7:30 pm – How will the Sanchez/Tebow drama unfold and is there a controversy? Their respective play tonight should begin to quell the “Tebow for starter” crowd unless Sanchez performs horribly and Tebow shows things he has yet to show. Ever. Also of interest is Jets’ rookie Stephen Hill. He’s a Megatron-like physical specimen, from the same college (Georgia Tech) as Calvin Johnson, but comes into the NFL very raw. Look for Jets OC Tony Sparano to try at least one deep ball to him, probably on a second-and-short or something in order to gain as favorable a matchup in the defensive play calling as possible. On the Bengals’ side, the “punk’d” WR Mohammed Sanu starts his attempt at becoming QB Andy Dalton’s #2 option at WR…after A.J. Green.

Browns @ Lions, 7:30 pm – Probably this is Brandon Weeden’s weakest opponent of the preseason…at least as far as their secondary goes. Louis Delmas is out indefinitely and the Lions have very little talent at corner. With the injury to Trent Richardson, look for the Browns to check out their “other new toy” more in the passing game while Richardson’s fellow RBs get a good look as coaches scramble in worry over Richardson’s return timeline. The Lions’ concerns lie more with their aforementioned pass coverage so look for ANYONE that might stand out there. They are in dire need now of playmakers.

Giants @ Jaguars, 7:30 pm – All eyes should be on 2nd-yr QB Blaine Gabbert of the Jags. He was dead last in just about every NFL passing category last season and looked completely lost most of the time. The result? The Jags signed Miami Dolphin cast-off QB Chad Henne. I think if Henne outplays Gabbert in the preseason, it’ll be very, very difficult for Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Mike Mularkey to start Gabbert. This is by far the biggest issue of any position battle on their squad and Gabbert really needs to start showing some street magic that he has yet to offer in his short career. We need to watch how the Giants’ run defense holds up the middle as they’ve done some retooling of their surprisingly soft, gushy middle from last season. Now, we start seeing if it holds. We know they can bring the heat on the QB as well as anyone.

August 3, 2012; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Vincent Jackson (83) catches the ball as defensive back Anthony Gaitor (26) attempts to defend during training camp at One Buc Place. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Buccaneers @ Dolphins, 7:30 pm – This game showcases the two most-changed teams of any week-one preseason matchup. Tampa Bay’s offense AND defense bear watching since they were the most active NFL team during free agency in the offseason. The most obvious things to watch will be how Josh Freeman and Vincent Jackson have developed chemistry…or if they haven’t. Early preseason matchups usually feature second and third stringers along with some rookies so they won’t be on the field for all that long, but watch and see how many targets he gets when they are. Both teams have first-year NFL Head Coaches, so it should be interesting from start to finish. Watch out for Bucs’ rookie LB LaVonte David, who is already making some noise in camp. The organization gave new Head Coach Greg Schiano as much of a boost as possible; now it’s his turn to show how he can mold them. As for the Dolphins, David Garrard needs to prove he can take hits after missing the entire 2011 season with a back injury. RB Lamar Miller has tons of talent and should be worth watching. Most of all to watch would be rookie Ryan Tannehill, who came into camp several days late due to contract issues, but has wowed the coaching staff since day one. Also, watch the pace and style of Miami’s offense…while I don’t think Joe Philbin will lay many cards on the table in week one of the preseason, we should get an idea of the personality they want to have on offense. It’ll be radically different from the 1960′s-style ground-and-pound that former Miami Head Coach Tony Sparano favored. Of the games tonight, this is the one to watch or listen to because of all the changes both organizations have undergone since last season and the heated QB position battle in Miami.

Cardinals @ Chiefs, 8:00 pm – John Skelton is going to wind up being the starter in Arizona whether it’s due to better play than Kevin Kolb or because Kolb stubs his toe, falls down and breaks his collarbone walking through the tunnel before the game. Kolb needs to wear the red practice jersey every time he steps on the field, but I’m sure there are rules about that…(wink). The biggest thing will be how far along is rookie WR Michael Floyd, and will he deliver enough to help take some double-teams off of All-World WR Larry Fitzgerald? The Chiefs’ questions at this point are more sober…with a number of skill position players coming off IR from last season, this should help evaluate their recovery progress. If I had one player to watch with the Chiefs, it would be how Dontari Poe plays. He was the talk of the Combine earlier this year, but underachieved at a small college. He is probably going to wind up the poster child in the “tape vs. upside” discussion for his 2012 performance, fairly or unfairly.

May 24, 2012; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe (92) and offensive lineman Rodney Hudson (61) scrimmage during organized team activities at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

Vikings @ 49ers, 9:00 pm – Boy, if there ever was a game of the “haves” vs. the “have-nots,” this matchup is the one. The Vikings are entering the second season of their rebuilding phase and currently do so without their big star, Adrian Peterson. Even if Peterson were unquestionably 100% recovered from his ACL tear from week 17 last season, he wouldn’t be playing much in any of the preseason games in the first place, so that’s not the issue some think it is. The Vikings need to evaluate the progress of second-year QB Christian Ponder and how well #4 overall pick and Carolina Panthers’ center Ryan Kalil’s brother Mike is picking up the nuances of playing the left tackle. They also have similar issues that the Lions do in the secondary, so someone needs to step up and this is the time to start. The Niners’ main concern is evaluating all the new bodies they picked up at WR after having a massive 3 yards passing to the WR corps in their NFC Championship Game loss to the Giants last season. However, keep in mind the quality of the Vikings’ secondary while you do. RB Frank Gore may have peaked his career by now and they’re looking to see who can take a share of carries and the load off the guy.

The Arizona Cardinals were a team in transition in 2011. They had a new QB in Kevin Kolb and an improving defense.

This year so far as OTAs and mini camps are concluding, things don’t look much clearer than they did at the end of last season. On the last day of mini camp, fans are traditionally let in to see the team. Kolb took the field to the boos of some 12,000+ fans who have long memories.

I have mixed feelings on the unlikely QB controversy. When Skelton started, they went 5-2. With Kolb starting, they won 1 game in 3. However, statistically speaking Kolb was the better player – except in the “win” column.

The much-maligned OL should have a whole new starting right sight and depth at both guard spots has been reinforced with mostly journeymen in the offseason. Two young running backs are coming off injuries, and rookie Michael Floyd’s role in the offense has yet to be discovered.

Lots of issues with the offense here.

The team’s best player, WR Larry Fitzgerald, has said the tight end position is a strength on the offense and he’s probably correct. They’ve got 3 with different skill sets and any one or two of which would probably start or see a lot of playing time in sub-packages for most teams. They’ve got depth and breadth there. Otherwise with a shaky, overpaid and fragile QB starting (Kolb – he’s making the money so he’s starting), a revamped OL, and rookies to work in, the Cardinal offense played like a confused team for much of minicamp.

Coach Whisenhunt said he began to see progress at the end, but what coach preaches doom and gloom at this point in the season? They all have to be upbeat whether they truly feel that way or not…unless things just look like a total disaster and motivation is the reason behind badmouthing your own squad. Certainly, a Head Coach doesn’t want anyone feeling complacent and constantly is looking for ways to motivate players, but things just weren’t pretty offensively.

No, the smart thing is to handle the issues with calm confidence, which is exactly how the team is handling it and that’s a good thing for organizational stability. For the defense’s part, it seems to be picking up somewhat from where they left off at the end of last season – an improving unit.

So where does this leave the Cardinals compared to last season’s team?

I think they’re taking a bit of a step backwards early but should wind up better for it in mid-late season. How they do out of the gate should dictate their chances at a wild card spot (49′ers will win the division again easily) as they learn to play together and anticipate better. I do think they’ve improved their overall talent and depth in most places they needed to.

Look for them to be an up-and-down team this year. I see no real improvement overall as the QB situation hasn’t gotten any clearer with Kolb’s shaky minicamp but a true offseason should only help his understanding and stats. If Kolb can grow into the QB they thought they were getting, they could have fits and starts of being dangerous with a lot of good weapons on offense.

Since the QB position is by far the most important, that’ll be the key here. Kolb nor Skelton are exactly Brady or Manning, but a lot can be achieved if everyone else on the offense picks things up.

A difficult team to project, I’ll play it a bit safe and say they should be about the same as last season with some chance of improvement. 10% chance of a playoff spot or Whisenhunt could find himself on the hotseat after another .500-ish season. They finished well last year and would be well served to carry that over to this one, but it isn’t showing up on the field yet.

They’ve still got a lot of work to do.

NEXT UP: Atlanta Falcons
