It’s a bit sad that an article like this even exists, but the reality is that concussions are a part of football and probably always will be. Here’s an update on 2 with recent ones, and one whose career hangs in the balance.

RG3 suffered a concussion in the Redskins’ loss to the Atlanta Falcons, but walked off the field under his own power. As I watched the aftermath, Griffin looked rather aware…he didn’t have that Sylvester Stallone look on his face, anyway.

The word is he had a full practice today and should play Sunday against the upsurging Minnesota Vikings, provided he passes all the new protocols for concussions. If so, it’ll be a great opportunity for the ‘skins to pick up a win against the thus far overachieving purple people eaters. He’s listed as questionable, but signs point to him playing.

Darrius Heyward-Bey is another player who was knocked out by a violent hit – his was two weeks ago, but he didn’t miss a game because of week 5 being the Raiders’ bye week. Ironically, they play the Atlanta Falcons this week and will need every healthy body to have any sort of chance at winning…unless they can get Darren McFadden going. The Falcons are giving up 5.4 yards per carry, so it actually could be a more interesting matchup than most believe although they’re playing in the Georgia Dome. Perhaps if nobody fumbles the ball away after a crucial first down, they could pull off what Cam Newton’s Panthers failed to do.

Before the preseason began and Jahvid Best and the Lions were talking up how healthy he was, I warned everyone that would listen to NOT take him in fantasy drafts. AT all. I pointed out that he’s damaged goods with an issue that is like trying to catch a greased pig – good luck with that. Not to be cruel, but that’s reality.

On Monday, Best underwent a battery of post-concussion tests, with the hope that he would be available as early as week 7. We’ve yet to find out the results of those tests, but it’s reported that the Lions have them and are examining them right now. They were supposed to release those results today, but have yet to do so. It’s now reported they’ll release the results next week, and Best has already met with doctors to find out what they had come up with.

I’m not sure which way to read into this. He’s on the Physically unable to Perform (PuP) list, so he’s not even eligible to play until week 7 no matter what. It could simply be that the slumping Lions don’t want to give out any news until they have to so that division rival Chicago – the Lions’ opponent in week 7 – won’t have any early warning or “heads up” on the situation.

That’s probably the first smart move the Lions have made all year.
