Every single solitary week in the NFL there are games that go exactly how you might think – Dallas winning at home over Tampa Bay – and others that are real head-scratchers – just about every OTHER game this week.

Pittsburgh loses at Oakland.

San Francisco loses at Minnesota.

3 overtime contests so far – 2 of which went against me. If not for Miami Head Coach Joe Philbin’s attempt to ice Jets’ kicker Nick Folk (the kick was blocked but Philbin had called a timeout), I’d have missed on all three.

Bizarre.

Still others are just plain difficult to project…the Lions lose at Tennessee..a team that could not find offense puts up 44? Even though the Lions’ defense is porous at best, one wouldn’t think a struggling team could pull that off.

Same thing in Oakland. The Raiders looked to be the AFC’s worst team after losing big at the lowly Dolphins last week. This week, Oakland stays at home and defeats the Steelers on a late Sebastian Janikowski field goal.

Yeah, bizarre week. It’s the first week my game predictions went really south after an 11-5 and 12-4 record the first two weeks. After the Monday night game is played, I’ll be lucky to have a 5-11 week or so I think.

In my predictions, I had said “No way will San Francisco lose at Minnesota.” So what happens? San Francisco loses at Minnesota. Hmm.

Week three is usually the week where the data points come together in a “best 2 out of 3″ type of deal and we learn some things that seem to go against all that we thought coming into the season.

For instance, the Arizona Cardinals, despite their QB struggles, actually do have a very fine defense capable of winning games for them on their own simply by keeping things close.

I thought the Steelers might be a bit weaker than they were last season, but the slide would be a shallow slope.

Not the case at all.

Oakland was able to put up that 34 points on them. That’s one doggone rusty “steel curtain,” wouldn’t you say? They certainly weren’t the “shoo-in” for the Eliminator challenge in the world of fantasy football and I just hit my wall by picking them this week. My other choice would have been San Fran over Minnesota. More to come later.

Ouch.
