The Cleveland Browns seem to be taking everything from the Carolina Panthers lately. They took our Offensive Coordinator first, Mr. Rob Chudzinski, to replace their old head coach, Pat Shurmur. Second, they took the best Offensive Coordinator on the market, Norv Turner, who I was sure was going to come to Carolina, even after all the rumors that he was going to be the Cleveland Browns next Offensive Coordinator, which in fact was his final destination. And now they seem to be after the Carolina Panthers backup Quarterback Derek Anderson.

Dec 4, 2011; Tampa FL, USA; Carolina Panthers quarterbacks Cam Newton (1) and Derek Anderson (3) in the first half of their game at Raymond James Stadium.
A Charlotte area news station reported that Derek Anderson posted on his Facebook page recently that “it looks like it is time to make a return to a familiar place for some unfinished business.” Anderson’s Offensive Coordinator at Cleveland was the Panthers old Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski. One of the reported reasons that Anderson first came to Carolina was because of his loyalty to Chudzinski. So more than likely, we will not be seeing Derek Anderson wearing any combination of blue, black, or white next year.

Of course there always seems to be a need for revenge every time someone steals from you, and that is exactly what the Panthers seem to be doing. Now former Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur has been in talks for the vacant spot left by his replacement. Along with Shurmur the Panthers also have reportedly been in talks with Cincinnati Bengal’s secondary coach, and former Oakland Raider’s head coach, Hue Jackson, as well as the Panthers current Quarterback’s coach Mike Shula.

However, while researching the topic on who we should hire as our next Offensive Coordinator, I found a very interesting article explaining why we should hire former Tampa Bay Running Back’s coach Steve Logan. “Since leaving his job as running back’s coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2011 season Steve Logan has worked in media. In much the same way he coached, Logan is different. He is bold, opinionated, and entertaining. Once described as the curious pirate for his unpredictable, unconventional, and surprisingly successful tenure at East Carolina, Logan has won consistently with players other teams did not want.” I implore every reader to read the article as it is very insightful. You can find all of it on opposingview.com.

So with all that being said, Steve Logan and Pat Shurmur are my frontrunners for the vacant position of Offensive Coordinator. Who’s your personal frontrunner?

The Cleveland Browns’ Uberrookie running back Trent Richardson may sit out the team’s initial preseason game against Detroit, according to Head Coach Pat Shurmur. He indicated they’d evaluate him and go from there.

Richardson didn’t seem overly concerned about it and it appears so far it’s “simply” some swelling due to two weeks of camp on the same knee he had arthroscopic surgery on in February, causing him to miss working out at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this year.

It could be that it’s nothing more than the tail-end of his healing process and hadn’t ever truly been completely rehabilitated due to the differences in a collegiate and a professional-level training camp. Rookies’ bodies simply have never experienced the grind before and even a minor surgical procedure from six months ago can only add to the adjustment.

Jun 12, 2012; Berea, OH, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple (left) and offensive coordinator Brad Childress (right) watch as quarterback Brandon Weeden (3) hands off to running back Trent Richardson (33) during minicamp at the Cleveland Browns training facility. Mandatory Credit: David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

Since he was two years behind ex-teammate Mark Ingram and turned pro a year early, he’s got relatively little wear on him for a #3 overall draft pick. In two years of part-time duty with Ingram then full-time last year he’s got 540 career carries. 245 of those came last year, so he had doubled his workload from his first two seasons.

While this doesn’t appear to be a big concern, it will be something to keep an eye on. Mark Ingram had a history of getting dinged-up here and there but the New Orleans Saints traded up to take him late in the first round. He finished the season on Injured Reserve.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if the Browns play it safe with him and not even risk it. It’s the first PRE-season game, and it gives Shurmur a great excuse to evaluate all the other backs that much more. Richardson may not even take the field until their third game on Friday, August 24th against Philadelphia in their first home preseason contest.
