I have no other news or links to go by, aside from what I read via Chris Harris’ Twitter feed, but the “Hitman” is en route to Chicago, to join forces with Julius Peppers and the Bears’ defense.

“Breaking News- I will be traded to Chicago Bears. Carolina u have been great and deeply missed. I have a special place in my heart for you,” said Harris via Twitter.

So where does this leave the Panthers on defense? For one thing, it truly means that middle linebacker Jon Beason is the leader of the Panthers’ defense in 2010, amid a bevy of rookies and younger defensive players.

More to come, when more news becomes available.

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to trade defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets for a third and a fifth round pick in this year’s draft. While the deal has yet to be formally announced, it should be made official later today, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Carolina was anxious to trade Jenkins before owing him a $1 million roster bonus. The trade clears about $3 million in salary cap room for this season.

The Panthers also tried to deal Jenkins before last year’s draft, but their demand for a first-round pick wasn’t met. The most the St. Louis Rams were willing to give up at that time was believed to be a second-rounder.

Today’s move vaults Damione Lewis into the starting lineup at defensive tackle with Maake Kemoeatu. The Panthers will be looking for depth at defensive tackle and today are hosting a visit from Rod Coleman, who was recently released by Atlanta.
