Kicker Joey Slye received an opportunity to try one of the rarest plays in football when the Panthers executed a “fair catch, free kick” just before halftime. The 60-yard attempt failed and Slye also missed a 41-yard try later in the game – both wide right.
Michael Palardy was also busy on Sunday, effectively punting seven times. The unit also benefited from a muffed Tampa Bay catch attempt as backup running back Jordan Scarlett recovered the loose football.
Unfortunately, Panthers return man Ray-Ray McCloud also turned the ball over after a 10-yard return at the start of the second-quarter. His fumble granted the Buccaneers excellent field position and they scored just three plays later.
Carolina never attempted to return any kickoffs.
A stout San Francisco 49ers (5-0) team and west coast trip now awaits the Panthers following their bye.
