Legendary linebacker Luke Kuechly was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s, which only increases his lasting legacy with the Carolina Panthers.

Not many eyebrows were raised when linebacker Luke Kuechly was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s. He is widely regarded as one of the most ferocious players to ever play the position and produced a level of consistency rarely seen before.

He was thoroughly deserving of his selection to the 55-man roster thanks to his sterling effort during his eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Kuechly’s legacy will live long in the memory for those fortunate enough to have seen the player bounce around from sideline-to-sideline on a once-formidable defense.

While Kuechly may have made the right decision to call it a day to avoid health complications in later life. His loss to the Panthers’ locker room cannot be underestimated. The player quickly emerged as the heart and soul of the organization and someone that had no trouble motivating others around him to raise their game.

Although Kuechly did not win a Super Bowl in Carolina after falling agonizingly short in 2015 against the Denver Broncos. That does not tarnish the player’s overall impact in any way.

His community involvement is further evidence of the sort of characteristics Kuechly brought to the Panthers. He is potentially a first-ballot Hall of Famer and was a lock for the All-Decade team.

Luke Kuechly’s NFL career

Big things were expected of Luke Kuechly when he was taken ninth overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2012 NFL Draft. The former Boston College standout wasted no time in making his presence felt at the next level and you could see great things were in his future almost from the off.

Kuechly’s rookie season saw him rack up 164 combined tackles, 104 of which were solo. He also secured eight pass deflections, a sack, and two interceptions to win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.

If his first year in the league was good, the 2013 campaign was even better. Kuechly was a dominant force throughout the season on his way to 156 total tackles (93 solo), four interceptions, two sacks, and seven pass deflections.

This saw him secure the distinction of NFL Defensive Player of the Year in just his second season. The same elite standard continued throughout Kuechly’s career with the Panthers and resulted in him securing some lofty numbers before eventually calling it a day.

His 1,092 combined tackles (690 solo) from 118 games are just extraordinary. The player also attained 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, 18 interceptions, and 65 pass deflections to further highlight his overall influence on the organization.

Kuechly is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and was named first-team All-Pro on no fewer than five occasions. He was the beating heart of a defense that is going to miss him severely.

How will the Panthers fare without Kuechly?

Losing someone with the heart and desire that Luke Kuechly possesses is going to leave the Carolina Panthers with some enormously big shoes to fill.

They have signed Tahir Whitehead in free agency. But it remains to be seen whether or not the player can reach anything like the level Kuechly gave the Panthers on a weekly basis.

The new signing played well for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019, recording 108 combined tackles (79 solo). But he does not offer much from a coverage perspective and this is an area of his game he will need to work hard on in the pass-happy NFC South.

Shaq Thompson showed signs of life in 2019 alongside Kuechly. How he handles the extra responsibility without the perennial All-Pro will go a long way to determining if he can be considered as a long-term replacement.

This was a team that went 5-11 last season even with Kuechly in the line-up. Losing their defensive lynchpin does not inspire great confidence that a bounce-back campaign is on the cards.

The Panthers also have the option of drafting a playmaking linebacker with the No.7 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft later this month. Someone like former Clemson standout Isaiah Simmons is expected to warrant consideration given his versatility and game-changing ability.

One player cannot be tasked with filling the void left by Kuechly. It is going to be a collective effort and even that might not be enough to replicate his production.

What legacy does Kuechly leave behind in Carolina?

The impact Luke Kuechly made during his time with the Carolina Panthers cannot be underestimated. He was everything the franchise hoped he would be and more when they used a first-round pick to acquire his services.

His relentless style of play and thumping tackles made him an instant favorite with the Panthers’ fanbase. Kuechly loved nothing more than sticking a big hit on an opposing player before letting his emotions out to further get the crowd involved.

This transformation on the field was staggering when you consider how reserved Kuechly was outside of the lines. He is a composed figure who was capable of turning it on when it mattered most.

It would be a huge shock if Kuechly was not a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He will go down in Panthers’ folklore as one of their greatest ever players and is more than worthy of such a distinction.

If everyone had the sort of commitment and work ethic Kuechly display, the world would be a better place. What was equally as impressive as his on-field work was how much the player gave back to the community, showing he was much more than a big hitter that revolutionized the position.

There will never be another Luke Kuechly. He embodied everything good about the Panthers during his time with the franchise and being named to the NFL’s All-Decade team only increases how fondly he is going to be remembered as a player.
