Panthers schedule: Ron Rivera reunion comes too late in 2020
By Dean Jones
What can the Panthers expect from the Redskins?
There isn’t a great deal between the two teams on paper. The Carolina Panthers schedule would indicate another losing season as a completely revamped roster familiarises themselves with one another. The same can be said for the Washington Redskins, who look to be also-rans in the NFC East given the scope for improvement of other teams within the division.

Much will depend on the fortunes of second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who has former Panther Kyle Allen breathing down his neck after Ron Rivera traded for the signal-caller this offseason. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State had a disappointing rookie year and how he responds during his sophomore campaign will go a long way to determining just what sort of career he is going to have in the NFL.
There is also the matter regarding quarterback Alex Smith to consider, who has not given up hope of making a sensational comeback after nearly losing his leg. While he is not expected back in the immediate future. The Panthers schedule does not see them face Washington until late on and this might give the former No. 1 overall pick a shot.
Aside from running back Derrius Guice and wide receiver Terry McLaurin, the Redskins don’t have that much to shout about on the offensive side of the ball. The same cannot be said of Washington’s defense, which is littered with playmakers and has been further bolstered by the arrival of No. 2 pick Chase Young.
The pass-rushing phenom from the Buckeyes has generational talent potential and putting him on a defensive line that also consists of Ryan Kerrigan, Jonathan Allen, and Daron Payne has an exceptionally high ceiling against the Panthers new-look offensive front.
The likes of Kendall Fuller, Landon Collins, and Thomas Davis are standout performers at the second level and backend. So it is going to be difficult for the Panthers to get any offense going with whatever players they choose to go with on the penultimate weekend.
Sadly for both teams, the outcome of the game is unlikely to have any great impact on their fortunes in 2020.
