It is evident that Ben Roethlisberger’s glittering time under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers is coming to an end. He missed substantial time last season when an elbow injury and although he is expected to make a full return to health. It would be prudent for head coach Mike Tomlin to put a better backup behind him if the same scenario presents itself in 2020.

The Steelers’ securing an 8-8 record last season was nothing short of miraculous given the lack of quality at quarterback. Putting former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on the franchise would ensure the offense did not skip a beat if Big Ben were to miss more time.

Tomlin and other decision-makers will be all too aware that Roethlisberger is in the twilight of his career. Therefore, a long-time alternative must be found and Newton is an intriguing proposition with little mileage on the tires over the last two seasons.

ESPN writer Logan Mullen is a huge fan of this move and called it an “ideal job” for Newton.

"“The ideal job for Newton would be in Pittsburgh. The Steelers should get Ben Roethlisberger back after he missed 14 games in 2019 with an elbow injury, but the longtime starter is 38 and has missed 38 games over his 16-year career. Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges were replacement-level quarterbacks last season, and Newton could viably make his case to serve as Roethlisberger’s long-term replacement in Pittsburgh if he plays well in a couple of spot starts.”"

Whether Newton has the right sort of character to blend into the Steelers’ locker room remains to be seen. Tomlin is renowned for running a tight ship and this was further evident with the departures of Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell last spring.
