Carolina Panthers all-time list: Steve Smith – WR (No. 2)

Panthers Career: 2001-2013

How could you not love Steve Smith? At 5-foot-9, 195 pounds, the feisty wide receiver had no business being an elite player in the NFL. But that’s exactly what he was.

What Smith lacked in physical stature he more than made up for in toughness and skill. Nobody played with more heart than Agent 89. He is the best wide receiver and arguably best skill position player that the Carolina Panthers have ever had.

His best season in the league came in 2005 when he caught 103 passes for 1,563 yards with 12 of those catches going for touchdowns.

It should come as no surprise that Smith ended his career as Carolina’s all-time leading receiver in receptions (836), yards (12,197) and touchdowns (67).

Smith will always be remembered in Carolina for the intensity and tenacity he played the game with.

Carolina Panthers all-time list: Cam Newton – QB (No. 1)

Panthers Career: 2011-2019

There’s something about being No. 1 that just fits Cam Newton. So it is no surprise he makes the top spot on our list.

Newton is the best quarterback that Carolina has had throughout the team’s 25-year history. He holds just about every Panthers’ record throwing the ball.

Cam is one of those once in a lifetime players that transcend the game and really has no comparison. He was as dangerous as former Atlanta Falcon Mike Vick when he took off running with the football. But the signal-caller also had the big body of a prototypical pocket passer like Andrew Luck.

He could make all the throws and could carry the team on his back when he needed to. Newton’s talent was on full display during the 2015 season when he won the NFL’s MVP award.

This came about after Newton led the Panthers to a 15-1 record while passing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns. He also added 636 yards and 10 more touchdowns on the ground. The 2015 season was the quarterback’s peak as he led Carolina all the way to the Super Bowl.

It will be tough to watch another quarterback under center for the Panthers in 2020. Newton will be tough to replace. It’s too bad injuries cut his career short in Carolina.
