Carolina Panthers Round 5 (No. 52): Keith Ismael – C (San Diego State)

It was somewhat surprising that the Carolina Panthers did not address their offensive line at any point during the 2020 NFL Draft. They have signed a couple of veteran pieces to plug the gap in the short-term. But more is going to be needed if the team wants to contend in the future.

Center Matt Paradis was one of the more disappointing performers in 2019. And another repeat of this sort of production would undoubtedly see his time with the franchise cut short next spring. The Panthers selected safety Kenny Robinson with their fifth-round after the player impressed during his time in the XFL. But they would have explored the possibility of taking a young lineman here.

Keith Ismael has progressed his game considerably in recent months and would have been a high-value pick in this spot. He checks the versatility box having operated at center and guard. So the player had the potential to put real pressure on those in front of him on the depth chart.

There is nothing to suggest Ismael is not going to become an accomplished starter in the NFL with a little more refinement. He was selected by the Washington Redskins at No. 156 and could end up contesting for a starting spot when the prospect adjusts to his new surroundings at the professional level.

Robinson is no consolation prize for the Panthers. The player knows what it takes at the pro level and has the skills to back it up.
