Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl possibility: Brian Burns – DE

Although the Carolina Panthers defense was arguably the worst in the NFL last season. The franchise did see some encouraging signs from first-round pick Brian Burns.

The athletic player ended his rookie campaign with eight sacks. And with a better supporting cast surrounding him in 2020 things could continue to trend on an upward curve.

Burns will get the chance to show more of what he is capable of on a Panthers’ defensive line that could become a position of real strength. The organization is moving back to a 4-3 base scheme and will see the Florida State product line up alongside No. 7 overall pick Derrick Brown, returning veteran Kawann Short, and free-agent signing Stephen Weatherly.

This is a potentially prolific combination that is sure to improve the Panthers’ fortunes in both running and passing situations. Given the amount of space Brown and Short eat up on the interior. It would be a big surprise if this did not free up room for Burns to maneuver on the edge.

Burns might have lacked some power during the early stages of his career. But the player possesses an explosive element to his pass-rushing that gives opposing offensive lineman nightmares. Things were not easy for him or the Panthers last term. But hopes are high regarding a turnaround in this particular area of the field in 2020.

The defensive end is one of the team’s primary breakout candidates, which could land him at the Pro Bowl if he reaches his ceiling.
