Carolina Panthers EDGE Brian Burns

Lost in the disappointing end to the Carolina Panthers season was just how good first-round pick Brian Burns was. He wasted no time getting after the quarterback during his rookie campaign on his way to 7.5 sacks. This good enough for third-most on the team.

Burns has a quick first step which allows him to finesse big offensive lineman and trip them up. He never lets up until the whistle blows. And this creates opportunities to finish plays around the ball carrier consistently.

He should be the favorite to be Carolina’s best pass rusher in 2020. First-round draft pick Derrick Brown will clog up the middle of the line allowing Burns to fly off the edge.

The Panthers will likely field one of the youngest units in the league considering they drafted all defensive players in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burns will be asked to step up and be a major contributor despite his limited experience at the professional level himself.

Defensive coordinator Phil Snow has already talked about how he wants a fast and physical defense that can create turnovers. There is no better way in the NFL than to rush the passer. So expect Carolina to let Burns loose this coming season.

Burns had a really good rookie season. He must make a huge leap in his sophomore campaign if the team wants to improve their overall fortunes.
