Carolina Panthers: 3 players who could make All-Pro in 2020
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers All-Pro candidate: Shaq Thompson (OLB)
The 2020 season has the scope to be a big one for Shaq Thompson. The outside linebacker will not have Luke Kuechly alongside him for the first time in his career. But this could prove to be the catalyst behind the player taking his game to a new level next season for the Carolina Panthers.
Thompson is an immensely talented individual who has a high football IQ. This is matched by his exceptional athleticism that is equally as effective in running or passing situations.
To say the Panthers’ defense massively underachieved in 2019 would be something of an understatement. However, this is something that does not apply to Thompson.
The former first-round pick recorded 109 combined tackles, 75 solo tackles, three sacks, and three pass deflections during the season. And there is a considerable chance he takes his game to new heights with more responsibility on his shoulders next time around.
The Panthers now have a formidable-looking front seven in their new 4-3 base scheme. This also has the ability to come with more production from Thompson, who will get more room to work in thanks to the space eaters operating on the defensive line.
The player recently signed a four-year, $54.43 million contract extension with a $16 million signing bonus and $27.52 million guaranteed. He now has a chance to live up to this financial commitment. And if Thompson can become an elite player in the process then it would surely come with All-Pro contention.
