Dream candidates to replace Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney in 2021.
The Carolina Panthers have a big decision to make regarding Marty Hurney this offseason. The general manager is looking for a new deal and there has been no indication as to what owner David Tepper is going to do.
This has the potential to cause some significant problems for the Carolina Panthers. They’ve made a promising start to their rebuilding under head coach Matt Rhule – even if their 4-8 record doesn’t really reflect it – but another strong recruitment process in free agency and the NFL Draft to make the necessary steps forward next year is needed in no uncertain terms.
Hurney has come in for some criticism in recent years for some decisions, with the moves made prior to the 2020 campaign largely lambasted by Carolina’s fanbase. He has hit big with the majority of first-round picks over the years. But the time might have come for a fresh set of ideas to match the Panthers’ ambitious plans on and off the field.
We picked out four dream replacements for Hurney in the event he doesn’t get a new contract after this season.
Dream Candidate No. 1
This might be a long shot considering how long Joe Hortiz has been associated with the Baltimore Ravens. But it is an option that the Panthers should strongly consider if they decide to part ways with Hurney after the 2020 season.
Hortiz is a well-respected figure within football circles and has been a driving force behind player recruitment over the years. He has been Baltimore’s director of college scouting and director of player personnel, thriving in both roles during his tenure.
His long association with the Ravens would make it difficult to tempt Hortiz away from his post. However, it would be a real coup for Carolina if they could pull it off.
