Derrick Brown – Carolina Panthers DT

Derrick Brown should thank Marty Hurney for ending up with the Carolina Panthers. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Matt Rhule probably wanted more picks to potentially enhance his rebuild. But the organization held firm and took someone who has the potential to be their defensive anchor for the next decade.

If Scott Fitterer can get more help around Brown, then the sky is the limit.

This is something he looks intent on doing if his welcome presser comments are any indication. If they can bring in the sort of players who can decrease the amount of double-teams the No. 7 overall selection was faced with during his rookie campaign, it should aid them considerably.

Brown still managed to put up some eye-catching numbers despite some prominent attention with Kawann Short absent alongside him after a second straight trip to injured/reserve. Every pre-draft doubts about his ability to make a successful transition to the next level have been firmly put to bed and when Fitterer examines the sort of players that he can build around, then the Auburn product is high on the shortlist.

Carolina’s defense progressed encouragingly as the season went on. With a couple more useful additions in free agency or the 2021 NFL Draft, they could become one of the league’s best in no time at all.
