Panthers 2021 Draft: Why Penei Sewell is the dream pick at No. 8
By Dean Jones
Penei Sewell scouting report
- Position – OT
- Height – 6-foot-5
- Weight – 325 pounds
It’s hard to watch any sort of film regarding Penei Sewell and not be impressed. The offensive lineman has everything one looks for in an exceptional prospect and providing he makes a smooth transition to the next level, there is nothing to suggest he cannot make a substantial impact from the moment he steps onto the field.
Sewell’s play was so good in 2019 protecting Justin Herbert’s blindside, he received a Heisman Trophy vote. This is almost unheard of for a player at the position and further proof of the esteem in which he is held within the college ranks.
His balance is already NFL ready and Sewell has the sort of ruthlessness finishing off plays that is sure to go down well with scouts. This is matched by supreme athleticism that is rare to find, with the player having no trouble getting after opposing defenders at the second level after the initial point of attack has been dealt with.
There wasn’t a college defensive lineman in the country who got the better of Sewell over a consistent period of snaps. His footwork is already of an extremely high standard and The Draft Network project that he could even make the transition to guard later on in his career once any potential wear and tear begin to show.
Sewell comes into the NFL with a Pro Bowl or better ceiling and if he somehow falls to the Carolina Panthers at No. 8 overall, the decision should be an easy one.
